TRENDING: Rams projected to land Dolphins Pro Bowl cornerback as he declares his intentions to join Rams

The Dolphins are poised to release Xavien Howard, while the Rams could need an upgrade in their secondary.

The Los Angeles Rams traded a Pro Bowl cornerback to the Miami Dolphins in 2023; should they now sign Jalen Ramsey’s colleague, who might be a cap casualty as a result of the trade? Xavien Howard, a four-time Pro Bowl cornerback, is anticipated to be released by the Dolphins when the league year begins in March. The Rams will have more than $40 million in salary room, and the 31-year-old Howard should cost considerably less than his last contract, even though he was still a decent cornerback in 2023.

Howard missed four games in 2023 but is normally injury-free. At least not more than the typical cornerback. Howard played 745 snaps last year, completing 39 of 62 targets (63%), allowing one score and one interception while averaging only 6.8 yards per target.

Ahkello Witherspoon was the Rams’ best cornerback in 2023, allowing five touchdowns and averaging 7.1 yards per target. He was also targeted significantly more (106 throws against) while playing on a defense with Derion Kendrick and Cobie Durant, both of whom were targeted substantially less frequently.

With Witherspoon as a free agent, Les Snead and Sean McVay might debate the prospect of letting him go and signing Howard as the team’s new CB1, which may only be a temporary solution but should now be considered. The Dolphins save only $3 million by releasing Howard with $23 million in dead cap space, but a post-June 1 release saves $18.5 million and eliminates the need to pay his $15 million salary.

I expect Howard to earn around $10 million each season, same to Stephon Gilmore. If Howard wants to compete for a championship with the Rams, a one-year, $10 million contract with incentives may suffice.
