BREAKING NEWS: Blues to sign top January target on free transfer from rivals this summer

Birmingham City can restart their pursuit of Ian Poveda in the summer, when his contract with Leeds United expires.
Ian Poveda makes Blackburn Rovers loan move - Leeds United

Blues targeted Poveda during the January transfer window, but Tony Mowbray was unable to shed anyone to make room in his squad to sign the winger. Sheffield Wednesday signed Poveda on loan from Leeds on deadline day, and he played a significant role in the Owls’ 2-0 success over the Blues on his full debut.

Speaking after the game, Mowbray confessed that the Blues came close to signing the Colombia international in January. He said, “Poveda is a good player, I must say. We were quite close to signing Poveda during the recent signing period. He was a player I had at Blackburn Rovers and is a really gifted young man.”

Poveda, who was born in London, has helped Wednesday win three of their previous four matches, boosting their chances of escaping relegation back to League One. If Wednesday remain in the Championship, manager Danny Rohl is set to try to sign Poveda on a permanent basis.

However, his impressive performances for Hillsborough will put other Championship clubs on alert. Poveda’s contract with Leeds expires in the summer, and he will be permitted to leave on a free transfer now that he is 24.

The Blues actually have a left-footed right winger in Koji Miyoshi, but Mowbray plainly prefers Poveda. Poveda played 10 appearances for Blackburn under Mowbray, scoring one goal and assisting twice during an injury-plagued 2021/22 season.
