JUST IN: Seahawks Set To Sign All Top 3 Ravens Star Free Agents

What a lovely, neat package it would be if new Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike MacDonald could simply wave his salary-cap magic wand and steal all of the top free agents from his last team, one of the strongest defenders in sports. Need a defensive lineman? Sign Jadeveon Clowney away from the Baltimore Ravens! Need a linebacker? Take Patrick Queen from the Ravens’ roster! Need a defensive back? Steal from the Ravens and sign Geno Stone!

Macdonald is a former Ravens defensive coordinator, thus he is well familiar with these players. With the Tyler Lockett move, the Seahawks will have approximately $50 million to spend in NFL free agency, which begins on Monday. But is it true, according to ESPN, that Macdonald is such a Pied Piper that he will replace the Seattle defense in one fell swoop by bringing in some of the finest from each position group? We will argue that ESPN is “short-cutting” its way to a paywall tale that has more attention-grabbing appeal than fact.

We will accept that Queen is predicted to be a $20 million APY man, while Clowney and Stone are projected to be around $8 million. So the Seahawks could make the math work. However, this approach would result in the strong Ravens (who don’t have much room to play with right now) losing all three players. And no other team intervenes. And that a trio of players who just had career years – Stone with seven interceptions, Clowney with 9.5 sacks, and Queen with 133 tackles – all board the same private aircraft to become Macdonald’s “Seattle Ravens.”
When Stone and Clowney played together in Baltimore and Queen, they helped rock a Macdonald defense that led the league in sacks (60), allowed the fewest points per game (16.5), and tied for the NFL lead in takeaways (31). Bring them together in Seattle? It appears to be a fantastical proposal, but we’re confident that incoming coach Macdonald would support it.
