BREAKING NEWS: QB Mac Jones Send a Bizarre Message To Patriots After Completing Trade To Jaguars

In free agency, several veteran quarterbacks found new homes. However, a number of trades involving signal-callers occurred, notably one that ended Mac Jones’ stint with the Patriots.

The 2021 first-round pick was traded to the Jaguars last week in exchange for a sixth-round pick. Jones will be able to play for his local team while also receiving a fresh start after a disappointing season with New England. He will be Trevor Lawrence’s backup for at least one season, while the Patriots rebuild at quarterback. Jones recently discussed the trade.

“We kind of just decided the mutual parting of ways was the best decision for both of us,” the 25-year-old told the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed. “For me, it was just about moving on and returning home, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. For them, it’s all about progress and turning the page. So that’s what we decided, and I believe it’s a good option.”

Jones had a promising rookie season, but his problems the following year with Matt Patricia and Joe Judge raised concerns about his long-term viability as a starter. A coaching change resulted in Bill O’Brien taking over the Patriots’ offense in 2023, but Jones did not recover as expected. The Alabama product was benched in favor of Bailey Zappe to finish the season, fueling speculation that he may be traded in the offseason.

The Patriots have actually moved on, with Zappe, former Jaguars acquisition Nathan Rourke, and veteran Jacoby Brissett on the quarterback depth chart. New England is largely expected to choose a signal-caller third overall, which adds validity to Jones’ claim that the trade was a mutual parting of ways. The latter will battle for the QB2 position in Jacksonville with veteran C.J. Beathard.

Jones has one year left on his rookie contract, and the Jaguars will very certainly decline his 2025 fifth-year option (for $25.66 million). His free agency prospects will thus be determined by his performance this season, which will provide few opportunities assuming Lawrence remains healthy. Jones’ importance and the success of his replacement will be worth watching in 2024.
