Latest Update: Just In Miami Dolphins Confirm Reach Agreement To Sign Top Experienced Star

Tell me where you first heard this song.

The Miami Dolphins intervened at the last moment to prevent the athlete from having to play for a team that everyone despises when he still lived in New York, New Jersey, where the New York Jets had their sights set on him.

Superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill experienced it.

And now, pass-rusher Shaquil Barrett of the Miami Dolphins claims that he experienced the same thing. Barrett discussed how he believed he was going to the Jets in a recent interview with Zach Gelb of CBS Sports, but Chris Grier and crew intervened at the last minute and made the two-time Super Bowl-winning pass-rusher an offer he could not turn down.

Shaquil Barrett explains to Zach Gelb of CBS Sports why he chose to join with the Miami Dolphins rather than the New York Jets.
“My agent and I were discussing the possibility of visiting New York. And up until—maybe—I can’t recall the day I signed, it was all in New York. However, until I ultimately reached an agreement with the Dolphins, it was New York. They really did come out of left field.

AD Barrett went on to say:

“While I adore the idea of seeing New York, the Dolphins seem like a more seasoned club. At this time, they have additional evidence. And in the pass-rush room, they had some really good men. I was therefore excited to collaborate with them. And it really helps that there is no state tax.

Barrett is reportedly fond of the other linebacker room members. Afterwards, though, the 31-year-old pass rusher claimed that signing with the Dolphins was the superior option. It also permitted his family to stay in Tampa Bay just up the road.

“It was just a slightly better opportunity, in my opinion. And lastly, contemplating my family—that aspect also played a significant role. Not actually needing to move for a whole year. Having to go through it would be awful. I was therefore content. Essentially, this represents the optimal situation. Moving a short distance down the road for a few hours wouldn’t affect anything for the future year.

Except for Barrett, nobody anticipates Barrett to be a top pass-rusher in 2024. Here’s what he said about his continued belief that he is among the league’s best edge rushers in that same interview with Gelb. (Source: JoeBucsFan)

Shaq stated, “As long as I’m healthy and have like a full offseason to train and get right — and make sure to get into this playbook so I won’t have to second guess anything — just read and react — I think I can still be top-10, top-5, top-2, and top-1 edge rusher in the league.”

Barrett led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in tackles and sacks in the regular season after starting 16 games. Not to mention the depth he can add to the unit once Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips are healthy, his job as the stand-in until those guys are ready could prove to be a godsend. The fact that Miami sniped him from the Jets is merely cherry on top of a move that I think is good!

In the end, I feel like this is the next step forward for Bruce Irvin, Justin Houston, or Melvin Ingram. Perhaps we can even include Emmanuel Ogbah in the mix. Still, Shaq Barrett should be the ideal solution for Anthony Weaver and the Dolphins defense, given the team appears to be without standout outside linebackers Chubb and Phillips come 2024 training camp.

How do you feel about Shaq Barrett and the Miami Dolphins singing? Do you find it surprising that Miami signed the seasoned pass-rusher out of “left field”? About the Dolphins defense going into the upcoming season, what are your thoughts? Tell us in the space provided for comments below!
