There were two issues with what West Virginia coach Mark Kellogg said. One, the game was held at Carver-Hawkeye Area, the Hawkeyes’ home court. Even if they lost, they would not pack because they were already at home.

Two, Clark is energized by trash talk, officials, or anyone who stands in her path on the basketball court. She scored 32 points in Iowa’s 64-54 victory, going 11 for 12 from the foul line and shattering Kelsey Plum’s single-season scoring record.

Kellogg’s speech inspired the Mountaineers, who put forth a strong defensive effort. In an excellent second quarter, they limited Clark to one-of-five shooting and Iowa to six points. The problem was that they only scored nine.

West Virginia also limited Iowa to a single field goal in the fourth quarter, tying the game with a 10-0 run to begin. But they committed 12 fouls in the quarter, and Iowa advanced by making 14 of their last 15 free throws.

Now Iowa is preparing for the Albany regional, when Clark will aim to extend her scoring record against Colorado. The Buffaloes’ head coach has carefully avoided discussing Clark. Yet.
