Chiefs Are “Optimistic” 2020 Draft Pick Can Be Re-Signed: Report

After officially moving cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans, the Kansas City Chiefs have freed up cap money. According to Arrowhead Pride’s Pete Sweeney, the Chiefs are focusing on re-signing one of their edge rushers.

On March 29, Sweeney wrote, “We’re told Kansas City is also optimistic about using the additional cap space to retain 26-year-old free-agent defensive end Mike Danna.”

According to Over The salary, the Chiefs have $26.3 million in salary space now that Sneed’s $19.8 million contract hit is off their books. That leaves room to sign their future draft class, re-sign Danna, and complete a number of other moves.

Mike Danna After a Career Season
The Chiefs selected Danna, 26, in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He has been a member of Kansas City’s roster for the past four seasons, and he has improved each time.

According to PFF, Danna recorded career-highs in 2023 in terms of total quarterback pressures (41), stops (31), hurries (28), and sacks (8). According to Pro Football Reference, he also participated in a career-high 74% of the team’s defensive snaps.

At the end of March, Danna is still a free agent despite having a great season last year. Fortunately, his former team needs depth along the edges and has some newly acquired cap space.

George Karlaftis, a 2022 first-round selection, has established himself as a Kansas City starter. The team also includes Charles Omenihu, who may not be prepared for the 2024 season’s start because of an ACL tear he sustained near the conclusion of the 2023 campaign. Beyond those two players, Kansas City possesses Jordan Smith, Malik Herring, Truman Jones, BJ Thompson, and Felix Anudike-Uzomah, a 2023 first-round pick. None of these guys have shown they can be reliable rotation players.

The two-time defending Super Bowl winners would have reliable depth on the edge if Danna were to rejoin the team. Since they parted ways with Sneed, who regularly bought the defense time in the trenches to get to the quarterback, the team needed a strong pass rush unit.

Spotrac’s estimate of Danna’s market value places her at $50.3 million for a three-year deal.

L’Jarius Sneed Could Be Traded by Several Teams: Report
Not just the Titans were considering a trade for Sneed. Throughout the process, Sweeney claims that the Minnesota Vikings, Indianapolis Colts, and New England Patriots all shown interest in signing the top defensive.

The Chiefs had “considered sending a 2024 fourth-round pick and a 2025 third-round pick in exchange for Sneed,” according to Sweeney, but “they discontinued discussions due to his medical history.”

According to Sweeney, Tennessee’s offer to Kansas City ended up being the only formal offer made to the Chiefs.

Sneed and the Titans have a new contract that is worth $76.4 million over four years with $55 million in guarantees. According to Over The Cap, this places Sneed as the fifth-highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL based on guarantees.

Following Sneed’s departure, Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams, Nic Jones, Kelvin Joseph, and Ekow Boye-Doe make up Kansas City’s CB room.

In Detroit, Michigan, on April 25, the NFL Draft of 2024 will get underway.
