AUSTIN: Despite losing a ton of talent to the NFL this offseason, the Texas Longhorns have strengthened their roster via the transfer portal.

Given the recent remarks made by Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, one of those transfer acquisitions may end up having the biggest influence.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Touchdown Club of Houston, Sarkisian gave outside linebacker Trey Moore some noteworthy compliments.

Sarkisian declared, “(Trey Moore) is going to be a real problem.” “He’s going to be a guy to watch this fall.”

The San Antonio native and graduate of Smithson Valley High School chose to remain in the 210 as a member of the 2021 recruiting class, and it paid off. He made an impact for the UTSA Roadrunners and head coach Jeff Traylor last season, earning 45 total tackles, three passes defended, one forced fumble, an interception, and 14 sacks during the regular season—the third-most in FBS—after recording just one tackle as a rookie. This happened in 2022 after he had two forced fumbles and eight sacks.

Moore’s 14 sack total in the SEC would have been practically unheard of given the increased competition from his opponents and his other defensive colleagues who are also vying for large statistics. But if he can build on his incredible 2023 season, the Texas defense may have one of the top pass rushers in the nation at his disposal.

On August 31, Texas will play Colorado State in Austin to start the season.
