Breaking: No. 1 5-Star All-American Quarterback Commits to Auburn Tigers Over Alabama Crimson Tide and Tennessee Volunteers

The Auburn Tigers are continuing to build for the future at quarterback, and recent recruiting developments suggest the program may be closing in on another important addition. While the Tigers are expected to rely heavily on transfer quarterback Byrum Brown during the 2026 season, the coaching staff is already focused on identifying the next long-term leader of the offense.

Brown, who transferred from South Florida Bulls, is projected to take control of Auburn’s offense as long as he remains healthy. Behind him, sophomore transfer Tristan Ti’a is viewed as another possible future option after arriving from Oregon State Beavers. However, college football roster situations can change quickly, especially in the transfer portal era, and Auburn’s staff appears determined to strengthen its quarterback depth for years to come.

One player who has quickly become a major target for the Tigers is Gary Chatman Jr., a three-star quarterback from Brookwood High School in Georgia. Chatman is currently ranked as the No. 57 quarterback nationally in the 2027 recruiting class and also sits among the top prospects in the state of Georgia. Although he is not considered one of the nation’s elite five-star recruits, Auburn clearly believes he has the potential to develop into a key contributor at the college level.

Momentum appears to be building strongly in Auburn’s favor. Recruiting analyst Christian Clemente of 247Sports recently submitted an official prediction projecting Chatman to eventually commit to Auburn. Clemente assigned a confidence rating of six out of ten to the prediction, signaling growing optimism around the Tigers’ chances. Around the same time, recruiting outlet On3 also added two predictions favoring Auburn to land the talented quarterback prospect.

If Auburn succeeds in securing Chatman’s commitment, it would represent another important step forward for the program’s 2027 recruiting class. The Tigers currently hold six commitments in the class, which is ranked 43rd nationally at the moment. Adding a quarterback early in the cycle would not only improve the class ranking but also help stabilize the future of Auburn’s offense.

Chatman’s possible arrival could also create an interesting quarterback competition down the road. If Ti’a remains with the program for another season, his experience would likely give him the advantage over a true freshman quarterback. That situation could actually benefit Chatman by allowing him additional time to develop physically and mentally while learning behind a more experienced player.

Despite the recent predictions favoring Auburn, the Tigers are not the only school still pursuing Chatman. Wake Forest Demon Deacons and Iowa State Cyclones remain involved in his recruitment. Chatman was previously committed to Wake Forest before reopening his recruiting process, leaving the door open for other schools to make their push.

Although a return to Wake Forest cannot be completely ruled out, Auburn currently appears to have significant momentum. Considering the recent buzz surrounding the Tigers, it would be surprising if Chatman ultimately chose another destination.

Auburn’s need for quarterback depth after the 2026 season makes this recruitment especially important. Outside of Ti’a and three-star prospect Rhys Brush, the Tigers have limited future options at the position. That gives Chatman an opportunity to potentially become a major piece of Auburn’s future if he decides to commit to the program.
