Breaking: St. Louis Cardinals Manager Oliver Marmol Reveals Six Players Likely to Be Traded Before the 2026 MLB Deadline

The St. Louis Cardinals have been one of the strongest teams in baseball during the early part of the 2026 season, but that does not guarantee the roster will remain the same throughout the year. In Major League Baseball, roster movement is inevitable, especially as teams approach the trade deadline. Injuries, performance issues, and organizational plans often force front offices to make difficult decisions. Even with the Cardinals enjoying success, changes are expected before the August 3 MLB trade deadline arrives.

President of baseball operations Chaim Bloom has already made it clear that the organization’s long-term strategy has not changed despite the club’s impressive start. Because of that, several players could become trade candidates or lose their roster spots altogether as the season progresses. Some veterans may attract interest from contending teams, while others could find themselves demoted or designated for assignment if struggles continue.

One player to watch closely is Lars Nootbaar. He was already involved in trade speculation during the offseason, but surgeries on both heels reduced his market value. Nootbaar is expected to return around early June, and while the Cardinals would benefit from his bat in the lineup, a strong stretch of performances could also increase his trade value significantly. If another team offers a strong package in return, St. Louis may seriously consider moving him.

Reliever JoJo Romero is another name that could draw attention around the league. Romero has continued his solid form after an impressive 2025 campaign, posting a respectable 3.50 ERA through 18 appearances this season. Reliable left-handed relievers are always valuable at the trade deadline, particularly for playoff contenders looking to strengthen their bullpens. Because of that, Romero could become one of the Cardinals’ more attractive trade assets.

Veteran pitcher Ryne Stanek has experienced a difficult start to the season. Through 17 appearances, he owns a 7.20 ERA across 15 innings, numbers that have raised concerns about his role moving forward. If Stanek can improve over the coming months, another club may still show interest in him before the deadline. However, if his struggles continue, the Cardinals could instead decide to remove him from the roster entirely.

Young reliever Matt Svanson has also endured a rough season statistically. Although there have been signs of improvement recently, his 9.64 ERA through 17 outings remains alarming. St. Louis may eventually send him down to Triple-A to regain confidence and consistency if better results do not arrive soon.

Another bullpen arm facing uncertainty is Justin Bruihl. He has posted a 5.29 ERA in 18 appearances and has not consistently delivered dependable innings. Much like Svanson and Stanek, Bruihl’s future with the big league club may depend heavily on how he performs over the next several weeks.

Lastly, catcher Yohel Pozo could also lose his spot on the roster. Pozo has appeared in only nine games and is batting just .118. With limited production offensively, the Cardinals may eventually decide that his roster position could be better utilized elsewhere, potentially leading to a demotion to the minor leagues.

While the Cardinals are currently thriving, the front office is expected to stay active and flexible. As the trade deadline approaches, these six players could all find themselves involved in roster changes for very different reasons.
