The Philadelphia Phillies made a roster move ahead of their upcoming road series against the Boston Red Sox, parting ways with veteran outfielder Oscar Mercado after his stint in the organization. The decision came on Monday, a day after the Phillies wrapped up a successful home series against the Colorado Rockies in which they secured two victories in three games.

Mercado had been playing under a minor league contract with Triple-A Lehigh Valley before being released by the organization. The 31-year-old struggled to find offensive consistency during his time with the IronPigs, batting just .141 across 24 games. In limited action, he collected 10 hits, one home run, six RBIs, and scored nine runs while also stealing three bases.
Although his production at Triple-A did not meet expectations, Mercado still carries valuable major league experience that could attract interest from other teams searching for depth in the outfield. His combination of speed, defensive versatility, and previous MLB success may make him a worthwhile low-risk signing elsewhere.
Mercado’s professional baseball journey began when he was selected in the second round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He eventually reached the major leagues with the Cleveland Guardians, where he spent the first several seasons of his career. During his time in Cleveland, Mercado showed flashes of promise as an athletic outfielder capable of impacting games both offensively and defensively.
Following his tenure with the Guardians, Mercado later spent time with both the Phillies organization and the St. Louis Cardinals. Over five MLB seasons, he appeared in 298 games and produced a career batting average of .237. He also recorded 211 hits, 26 home runs, 100 RBIs, 123 runs scored, and 29 stolen bases.
One of the most memorable performances of Mercado’s career came during the 2023 season while playing for St. Louis. Baseball writer Katie Woo highlighted a standout game in which Mercado delivered a clutch performance at the plate. With the bases loaded and two outs, he came through with a key hit that drove in two additional runs, giving him five RBIs on the day and matching a career-best mark.
Despite his recent struggles in Triple-A, Mercado’s experience at the major league level could still provide value to organizations needing veteran depth. Teams looking for an experienced outfielder on a minor league deal may view him as a player capable of contributing if given another opportunity.
Meanwhile, the Phillies continue focusing on climbing the standings in the National League East. Entering their series against Boston, Philadelphia holds a 19-22 record and sits in second place in the division. The club has recently shown signs of improvement, winning seven of its last ten games after a slow start to the season.
Following their three-game set at Fenway Park, the Phillies will continue their road trip with another series against the Pittsburgh Pirates beginning Friday night in Pittsburgh as they attempt to build momentum moving forward.
