Kentucky basketball has added another key piece to its roster through the NCAA transfer portal, as head coach Mark Pope continues to reshape the Wildcats for the upcoming seasons. On Saturday, Franck Kepnang announced his commitment to Kentucky, bringing veteran size and defensive presence to Lexington.
The news of Kepnang’s decision was first shared through the UK Sports Network’s official account on X, confirming that the 6-foot-11, 225-pound center will join the Wildcats after a long collegiate journey that has taken him across the West Coast. Originally from Cameroon, Kepnang has built a reputation as a defensive-minded big man with strong shot-blocking ability and rebounding instincts.

Kepnang’s college career began at Oregon during the 2020–21 season, a year in which the NCAA did not count eligibility due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He officially saw his first significant action in the 2021–22 season, appearing in 35 games and making five starts for the Ducks. His early role focused mainly on defense, rim protection, and providing energy off the bench.
After two seasons in Eugene, Kepnang transferred to Washington, where his career experienced both setbacks and growth opportunities. His first year with the Huskies in 2022–23 was cut short after just eight games due to a season-ending injury, slowing his development and limiting his impact on the court.
Despite the injury setback, Kepnang remained with Washington and worked his way back into the rotation over the following seasons. Across the 2023–24 and 2024–25 campaigns, he appeared in a combined 24 games, gradually regaining his form and adjusting to a larger role.
His most productive season came in 2025–26, when he finally established himself as a consistent starter. Kepnang started 25 of 27 games for the Huskies and delivered strong defensive numbers that stood out in conference play. He finished third in the Big Ten in both total blocks (55) and blocks per game (2.07), highlighting his ability to protect the rim at a high level.
Along with his defensive impact, Kepnang contributed offensively in a limited but efficient role. He averaged 6.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while playing 22.9 minutes per contest. While not a primary scoring option, his presence in the paint and ability to alter shots made him an important piece of Washington’s lineup.
Now heading to Kentucky, Kepnang enters what will be his seventh season of college basketball, bringing a rare level of experience and maturity to the Wildcats’ frontcourt. His addition gives Coach Mark Pope another physical interior presence as Kentucky continues to rebuild its roster through the transfer portal.
For the Wildcats, Kepnang represents a low-risk, high-experience addition who can immediately contribute defensively, particularly in rebounding and shot-blocking situations. His journey from Oregon to Washington and now Kentucky reflects both resilience and development over a lengthy college career.
As Kentucky prepares for the upcoming season, Kepnang’s arrival adds depth and size to a roster aiming to compete at a high level in the SEC and beyond.
