BREAKING: Cardinals announce 2 roster moves before Brewers game

The St. Louis Cardinals made a pair of pitching roster adjustments ahead of their Tuesday matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers, continuing a series of moves aimed at stabilizing their roster during a competitive stretch in the National League Central.

The changes come shortly after the Cardinals dropped a 5-1 decision to Milwaukee on Monday, a loss that added more urgency to the club’s push to stay in the division race. In response, St. Louis shuffled its pitching staff between the major league roster and Triple-A Memphis.

One of the key moves involved left-handed pitcher Brycen Mautz, who was recently called up and made his MLB debut just a day earlier. Despite the excitement surrounding his arrival, the Cardinals decided to option him back to Triple-A Memphis after a brief stint in the majors.

In a corresponding transaction, the team recalled right-handed reliever Ryan Fernandez from Memphis, bringing him back to the big league bullpen after a short time in the minors. The moves were officially announced by the organization on social media ahead of Tuesday’s game.

The Cardinals confirmed the roster updates, stating that Fernandez had been recalled from Triple-A while Mautz had been optioned back down. The quick turnaround highlights the fluid nature of the team’s pitching depth as they search for reliable bullpen and spot-start options.

Mautz’s MLB debut came under unusual circumstances. Originally scheduled to start against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, his outing was delayed due to rain. Instead of starting, he was called upon out of the bullpen on Monday, entering the game in the sixth inning. In that appearance, the Cardinals’ No. 20 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, worked three innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out two batters.

After his debut, Mautz described the experience as challenging but valuable, noting the difficulty of adjusting from preparing as a starter to suddenly pitching in relief. He explained that he had mentally prepared for a traditional starting assignment against Cincinnati’s lineup, only to shift roles unexpectedly due to weather delays and game conditions. Despite the disruption, he emphasized that adapting to different roles is part of professional baseball.

“It was definitely a little bit of a rollercoaster,” Mautz said following the game, reflecting on the mental and physical adjustments required. He added that learning how to transition between roles is part of what the game demands from young pitchers.

While Mautz heads back to Memphis for further development, Fernandez returns to the Cardinals after a brief minor league assignment of his own. His most recent outing at Triple-A was impressive, as he struck out three batters over two innings while retiring all six hitters he faced. That performance caught the attention of the organization, including manager Oliver Marmol.

Marmol praised Fernandez’s effectiveness, particularly highlighting his fastball command and sharp slider, both of which have been key to his success when he is performing at his best. According to Marmol, those pitches were especially noticeable during Fernandez’s strong minor league appearance.

With both pitchers moving in opposite directions, the Cardinals continue to fine-tune their roster as they navigate a crucial stretch of the season. The organization remains focused on finding consistency in its pitching staff while balancing player development and immediate competitive needs.
