Jose Altuve Headed to Injured List After Oblique Strain, Astros Face Another Setback
The Houston Astros have suffered a significant setback in their lineup as veteran second baseman Jose Altuve is expected to be placed on the injured list after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 left oblique strain. Manager Joe Espada confirmed the update on Sunday, noting that the team is still assessing the full extent of the injury and has not yet established a clear recovery timeline.
The injury occurred during Saturday’s game against the Texas Rangers. Altuve appeared to suffer discomfort on an awkward swing in the eighth inning. After hitting a ground ball to third base, he did not run to first, signaling immediate concern from the dugout. He was later evaluated, and an MRI revealed the oblique strain. As a precaution, he was held out of Sunday’s lineup and will now officially miss time as he moves to the injured list.
Espada acknowledged the difficulty of losing one of the team’s most experienced and productive players but emphasized that the Astros will need to adapt quickly. He expressed disappointment with the diagnosis while also pointing toward younger players stepping into larger roles in Altuve’s absence. According to the manager, the situation creates an opportunity for the next wave of talent to gain valuable major league experience in high-pressure situations.
“Obviously just not what we wanted to hear,” Espada said, reflecting the organization’s frustration. “But we find ourselves having to fight through this one here. So these young players are going to continue to get opportunities.”
In response to Altuve’s injury, the Astros adjusted their infield configuration on Sunday. Rookie Brice Matthews was inserted into the starting lineup at second base, taking over Altuve’s usual position. Additionally, Braden Shewmake is expected to see increased playing time as the team evaluates infield depth and options moving forward during the veteran’s recovery period.
The injury comes at a challenging time for Houston, as the club continues to battle a long list of health issues. The Astros currently have 14 players on the injured list, placing additional strain on roster depth and forcing constant lineup adjustments. Despite these challenges, there is some positive news on the horizon. Shortstop Jeremy Peña, center fielder Jake Meyers, and reliever Nate Pearson are all projected to return to the active roster soon, with potential activation as early as Monday ahead of the series against the Minnesota Twins.
For Altuve, this latest setback interrupts a season in which he has remained a central figure in Houston’s lineup. The nine-time All-Star is currently batting .245 with 12 runs batted in, continuing to serve as both a leader and consistent contributor despite the team’s overall struggles. The Astros have had a difficult season so far, sitting at 19–29 and searching for stability in both their offense and pitching staff.
With Altuve sidelined indefinitely, Houston will now rely heavily on its depth and younger players to help stabilize the lineup. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the Astros can weather the injury storm and stay competitive in a challenging stretch of the season.
