The Seattle Mariners have experienced a somewhat uneven start to their season but have recently surged back into strong form, reclaiming the top spot in the American League West. After winning the division by a narrow margin last year and advancing all the way to the AL Championship Series, Seattle is once again in position to contend. However, if the Mariners hope to take the next step and return to October with a deeper postseason run, they may need to be aggressive at the upcoming trade deadline.
One area that has generally been a strength for Seattle this season is its bullpen. The relief unit has posted an impressive 3.00 ERA through 61 games, ranking among the more reliable groups in the league. Even so, postseason contenders often look to reinforce their bullpen depth, especially given the unpredictable nature of relief pitching over a long season. As a result, the Mariners could still benefit from adding another high-impact arm before the deadline.
According to CBS Sports analyst Mike Axisa, one potential target that could make sense for Seattle is Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman. Axisa listed Chapman among the top trade candidates this season and noted that several contending teams, including the Mariners, could emerge as potential landing spots. While Chapman has played for multiple clubs during his career, his experience and dominance in late-inning situations continue to make him an attractive option for playoff-bound teams.
Axisa pointed out that Seattle is one of the teams that could benefit from adding another elite reliever, especially given the importance of late-game pitching in postseason matchups. He also emphasized that there is rarely such a thing as having too much bullpen depth, particularly for a team with championship aspirations. Adding a proven closer like Chapman would give the Mariners another reliable weapon in high-pressure situations.
Chapman has enjoyed another strong season with the Red Sox, continuing to show why he remains one of the most recognizable relievers in baseball. In 19 appearances, he has recorded 12 saves while posting an exceptional 0.48 ERA, demonstrating both consistency and dominance out of the bullpen. Although he has taken one loss this season, his overall performance has remained elite.
Throughout his career, Chapman has built an impressive résumé that includes eight All-Star selections, two World Series championships, and two American League Reliever of the Year awards. His postseason experience is also notable, as every time he has been traded at the deadline in previous years, his new team has gone on to win the World Series. He was traded from the Yankees to the Cubs in 2016, helping Chicago capture a historic championship, and later moved to the Kansas City Royals before they won the title in 2023 with the Texas Rangers.
For the Mariners, who are still searching for their first World Series appearance in franchise history, adding a player with Chapman’s track record could represent a significant boost. Pairing him with current closer Andrés Muñoz would give Seattle one of the most formidable late-inning duos in baseball, potentially transforming the bullpen into a dominant postseason weapon.
With the American League West appearing more open than usual, the Mariners have an opportunity to strengthen their roster and solidify themselves as division favorites. President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has a history of making bold moves at the trade deadline, and another aggressive approach could once again shape Seattle’s postseason destiny. A move for Chapman would be costly, but it could also be the type of high-impact addition needed to push the Mariners deeper into October.
