The Seattle Mariners currently find themselves in a strong position within the American League West, sitting at the top of the division as the 2026 MLB season progresses. Despite their success, there is growing speculation that the team may still need to make a significant splash before the August 3 trade deadline if they hope to seriously compete for a World Series title. One of the most intriguing names circulating in recent rumors is Detroit Tigers ace pitcher Tarik Skubal.
According to multiple MLB insiders and projections, Skubal could become one of the biggest potential trade chips available this summer. Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently included the Mariners in a bold prediction scenario, suggesting that Seattle could attempt a blockbuster move to acquire the elite left-hander. In his analysis, Miller questioned why the Mariners wouldn’t consider pursuing such a high-impact arm given their current competitive window.
Seattle has already made several major roster investments and transactions in recent seasons, signaling a win-now approach. However, Miller noted that the Mariners are also approaching a critical phase of their roster cycle. Key contributors such as Randy Arozarena and J.P. Crawford are entering the final stages of their team control, while pitcher Logan Gilbert is also moving deeper into his tenure with the club. With that in mind, the opportunity to maximize the current roster may not last much longer.
Financial considerations, however, could present a major obstacle. The Mariners already posted their highest Opening Day payroll in franchise history, and acquiring Skubal would likely push their luxury tax payroll well above the $200 million threshold unless additional roster adjustments are made. Even so, Skubal’s prorated salary at the trade deadline is estimated at around $9.4 million, which could make a midseason acquisition more feasible from a short-term financial standpoint.
On the performance side, Skubal remains one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball when healthy. He is currently playing under a one-year, $32 million arbitration deal for the 2026 season, but expectations are that he will soon command one of the largest pitching contracts in MLB history. Industry projections from Spotrac estimate his next deal could reach nine years and approximately $379 million, reflecting his status as a frontline ace.
There has also been growing league-wide speculation about whether the Tigers will actually move Skubal before the deadline. Reports from analysts such as Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports suggest that Detroit is increasingly open to the idea of trading him, particularly if the right package of prospects and talent is offered in return.
Despite this, not all analysts believe Seattle is a realistic landing spot. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden pointed out that the Mariners already possess one of the deepest and most talented starting rotations in baseball, featuring arms like Logan Gilbert, Bryan Woo, George Kirby, Emerson Hancock, Bryce Miller, and Luis Castillo, with additional pitching prospects such as Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan developing in the system. Given that depth, Bowden suggested the Mariners are unlikely to pursue a rental player like Skubal.
Still, bold predictions are meant to challenge expectations, and the idea of Seattle making a surprise push for an elite ace remains an intriguing storyline. Even if the Mariners ultimately do not land Skubal, they are expected to remain active in the market for veteran pitching help as they look to strengthen their roster for a postseason run.
