As the trade deadline approaches in early August, speculation is growing about whether president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom will take an aggressive approach to strengthen the roster for a playoff run.
One player who has recently been linked to St. Louis is veteran left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray of the San Francisco Giants. Ray, a former American League Cy Young Award winner, is reportedly drawing attention from teams around the league due to his uncertain long-term future. With free agency looming, the Giants could consider moving the experienced starter before the trade deadline, creating an opportunity for contenders seeking rotation help.
According to a recent trade-rumors article by FanSided’s Christopher Kline, the Cardinals would be an ideal landing spot for Ray. Kline argued that St. Louis offers an appealing environment for a veteran pitcher because of the club’s emerging young core and renewed energy. The Cardinals have built momentum this season with a roster featuring several promising players, and adding a veteran with postseason experience could provide valuable leadership both on and off the field.
The Cardinals’ starting rotation has been one of the team’s biggest question marks despite its success in the standings. Compared to other National League contenders, St. Louis lacks the proven depth and frontline talent that many playoff teams possess. Ray could help address that issue by giving the Cardinals another experienced arm capable of handling meaningful innings during the stretch run.

However, some evaluators believe he remains a strong candidate for improvement and could benefit from a fresh start in a new organization.
