The Seattle Mariners currently hold first place in the American League West, but despite their strong position in the standings, many believe the club may need another major addition if it hopes to emerge as a legitimate World Series contender. As the August 3 MLB trade deadline approaches, speculation is already building around potential blockbuster deals, and one of the most intriguing names available could be Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal.
In a recent article discussing bold trade deadline predictions, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller suggested that Seattle could make an aggressive push to acquire Skubal, even though such a move would come with significant challenges. While the idea may seem unlikely at first glance, Miller argued that the Mariners have several reasons to consider making a major splash.
Seattle entered the 2026 season with high expectations after making notable investments during the previous offseason. The organization understands that its current championship window may not remain open indefinitely. Key contributors such as Randy Arozarena and J.P. Crawford are nearing the end of their time under team control, while star pitcher Logan Gilbert is only under contract for one more season beyond 2026. With several important roster decisions looming, the Mariners could feel pressure to maximize their current opportunity to compete for a title.
Adding a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber would certainly strengthen Seattle’s chances. The left-hander has developed into one of baseball’s premier starters, combining elite strikeout ability with impressive command and durability when healthy. However, acquiring him would require both financial flexibility and a willingness to part with valuable prospects.
One obstacle is the cost associated with bringing Skubal to Seattle. The Mariners already opened the season with the highest payroll in franchise history. According to Miller, adding Skubal without making corresponding salary cuts elsewhere would push Seattle’s payroll beyond the $200 million threshold. While the remaining portion of his 2026 salary would be manageable after the trade deadline, the long-term financial implications are much more significant.
Skubal is currently playing under a one-year, $32 million contract after reaching an arbitration agreement with Detroit. However, industry projections indicate that his next deal could be massive. Contract valuation site Spotrac estimates that Skubal’s market value could reach approximately nine years and $379 million, placing him among the highest-paid pitchers in Major League Baseball.
Meanwhile, there is growing speculation that Detroit may seriously consider moving its star pitcher. During a recent Fox Sports broadcast, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal noted that league executives increasingly believe the Tigers are trending toward trading Skubal. Detroit’s disappointing season has left the team well below .500, making a playoff push increasingly unlikely. If the Tigers determine they cannot realistically contend, dealing Skubal for a significant prospect package could become their preferred strategy.
Still, not everyone views Seattle as a likely destination. The Mariners already possess one of the deepest starting rotations in baseball, featuring Logan Gilbert, Bryan Woo, George Kirby, Emerson Hancock, Bryce Miller, and veteran Luis Castillo. In addition, highly regarded prospects Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan are progressing through the system and could contribute in the near future.
Because of that depth, some analysts believe Seattle would be reluctant to surrender major assets for a pitcher who could potentially be only a short-term addition. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden specifically questioned whether the Mariners would seriously pursue a rental player like Skubal given their current rotation strength.
Nevertheless, bold predictions are designed to challenge conventional thinking. While a Skubal-to-Seattle trade remains far from certain, the Mariners are expected to explore opportunities to upgrade their roster before the deadline. Whether that pursuit involves Skubal or another veteran star, Seattle appears poised to be one of the more aggressive teams in the trade market as it chases a deep postseason run.
