Drama surrounding the Pell City High School football program has abounded this offseason. That’s not too out of the ordinary when your head coach is Rush Propst, but this week, the infamous football coach submitted his resignation after just one season, adding even another chapter to the tale.

After leading the Panthers to a 1-9 season, Propst said that the reason why things weren’t going as quickly as fans had hoped was due to jealously and backstabbing. Nick Gentry, a former defensive lineman for Alabama football, was appointed Pell City’s next head coach on Saturday.

After his playing days in college were over, Gentry immediately into coaching after winning two national titles at Alabama. Prior to entering the high school ranks, he worked as a defensive coach at Jacksonville State and UAB. This will be his first position as head coach. On Friday, August 23, the Pell City Panthers play their first game of the season against Pelham High School.

Cecil Ingram was the recipient of the Hugo Friedman Prize, which is awarded yearly to the top athlete at Alabama, on this day in Crimson Tide history, May 5, 1954.
