In a move that feels both exciting and long overdue, the Vancouver Canucks have added Latvian forward Dans Locmelis to their organization finally bringing a sharp, skilled, and hard-nosed European presence into a system that has long lacked a true Baltic-born impact player.
Locmelis, a 2022 fourth-round pick by the Boston Bruins, quietly developed into a reliable two-way center during his time with Luleå in the SHL and later at UMass-Amherst, where his vision, hockey IQ, and leadership stood out in a young locker room. While he doesn’t come with the flash of a top-tier prospect, Locmelis brings something Vancouver has missed for years: a responsible, high-motor pivot with international pedigree and a chip on his shoulder.
The Canucks’ history with European forwards has been defined by Swedish finesse (the Sedins), Russian flair (Pavel Bure), and Czech creativity (Roman Horák in the farm system). But Latvia a country that continues to punch above its weight on the international stage had never been part of Vancouver’s identity until now. With the passion of Latvian fans and a growing NHL pipeline, it was only a matter of time.
For Canucks fans still recovering from years of false starts at center depth behind Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller, Locmelis could emerge as a key bottom-six contributor with room to grow. He brings power play experience from his international play and is no stranger to penalty kill duties either. And with his tireless work ethic, he fits seamlessly into head coach Rick Tocchet’s hard-nosed system.
Latvia’s hockey scene has surged recently culminating in their historic bronze medal at the 2023 IIHF World Championship. Locmelis was one of the team’s youngest players during the tournament and showed flashes of the poised center he’s becoming.
In many ways, this addition feels symbolic. Vancouver is tapping into an underappreciated hockey market while adding a player who mirrors the grit and determination the franchise is trying to embody. It’s the kind of move that won’t make headlines now but could pay real dividends in the months to come.
For Canucks fans, it’s time to break out the maroon, white, and a little bit of Baltic pride. The Latvian forward they should have always had has finally arrived.
