Breaking: Jubilation As Packers Make Major Move Involving CB Jaire Alexander

Packers Make Major Move Involving Star CB Jaire Alexander

The Green Bay Packers began their Organized Team Activities (OTAs) this week, marking the initial phase of their offseason preparations. These OTAs run through June 5 and will be followed by a mandatory minicamp from June 10 to 12. It’s all part of the team’s journey to position themselves for a serious Super Bowl push in the upcoming 2025 NFL season.

Compared to recent years, the 2025 offseason has been relatively calm and steady for Green Bay, with minimal drama or distractions. The one exception to this smooth process has been the uncertainty surrounding the future of standout cornerback Jaire Alexander. Earlier in the year, speculation about Alexander’s status ramped up when NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported in February that the Packers were open to hearing trade offers for the two-time All-Pro defender.

However, the narrative shifted by April, as fresh updates suggested that the Packers and Alexander had entered discussions aimed at keeping him in Green Bay. According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, the Packers have extended a proposal to restructure Alexander’s contract, though no final agreement has been reached yet between the two sides.

Alexander’s future with the team is complicated by both his performance and his availability. Over the past four seasons, he has missed 34 of Green Bay’s last 68 games due to various injuries. Despite his undeniable talent, his prolonged absences have been a concern for the organization. Financially, he also represents a significant commitment, with the third-largest cap hit on the Packers’ 2025 payroll. While he has participated in virtual team meetings during the offseason, he has not been seen at any of the team’s voluntary in-person workouts. On a more positive note, Schneidman reported that Alexander intends to attend the upcoming mandatory minicamp in June.

From a team-building perspective, retaining Alexander would be the most beneficial scenario for the Packers. The team currently lacks experienced cornerbacks who have proven themselves as consistent starters on the outside. Trading away a player of Alexander’s caliber, especially without a strong replacement in place, would be risky and potentially detrimental. Furthermore, General Manager Brian Gutekunst is unlikely to receive strong trade offers given Alexander’s injury history, high salary, and the fact that he will be 29 years old next February.

Another layer of complexity to this situation lies in Alexander’s contract. He signed a four-year, $84 million extension back in 2022, but there is no guaranteed money left on that deal moving forward. With his 30s approaching and his long-term future uncertain, Alexander could be aiming for a new contract that provides more financial security. Whether that involves an extension or a revised structure with added guarantees remains to be seen.

It’s entirely possible that a resolution could come before the start of training camp, which would provide stability heading into the heart of the offseason. If not, the matter could still be settled by the time camp begins, allowing Alexander to focus on preparing for the season.

All signs point to a mutual interest in finding common ground. The Packers need Alexander’s playmaking ability in the secondary, while Alexander likely recognizes the value of staying with a team positioned to compete. If both sides can navigate the contract discussions smoothly, this situation could transition from a point of concern into a long-term win for the franchise.

As Green Bay continues its offseason journey, Jaire Alexander remains a key figure in the team’s hopes for a strong 2025 campaign. His health, performance, and contractual future are all central to how the Packers shape their defense in the coming years.
