The Seattle Seahawks have made a notable move along their defensive line as the team announced they have released defensive tackle DeMeco Roland and signed defensive tackle Anthony Campbell in his place.
Roland, an undrafted free agent out of Bethel University, originally signed with the Seahawks in 2023 and had been working to find a stable spot on Seattle’s roster. While he flashed potential with his strong frame and quickness off the ball, Roland ultimately couldn’t secure a consistent role on the active roster. He spent time on the Seahawks’ practice squad and appeared in limited preseason action but did not register significant playing time during the regular season. His release signals that the Seahawks are looking to retool their defensive front with more size and athletic upside.
In a corresponding move, the Seahawks signed defensive tackle Anthony Campbell, a massive interior lineman with raw physical tools and upside. Campbell, who stands at 6-foot-7 and weighs around 300 pounds, was signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent out of Louisiana in 2024 but was recently waived. Though still early in his professional career, Campbell caught the attention of scouts with his rare blend of size and athleticism, and Seattle clearly sees untapped potential in his game.
Campbell played two years at Louisiana after transferring from UTEP, finishing his final collegiate season with 13 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. While his college production was modest, his frame and mobility have made him an intriguing project for NFL coaching staffs looking to develop interior depth.
This move is consistent with the Seahawks’ recent trend of bringing in young, high-upside players who can compete in training camp and potentially develop into contributors during the regular season. With Seattle under new leadership following the departure of longtime head coach Pete Carroll, the front office is clearly evaluating every position group and making changes where they see fit.
The addition of Campbell gives the Seahawks another body for what is expected to be a competitive training camp on the defensive line. He’ll have an opportunity to prove himself over the summer and possibly earn a spot on the 53-man roster or practice squad, depending on his performance and development.
For now, the Seahawks say goodbye to DeMeco Roland, who will look for his next opportunity elsewhere in the league, while Anthony Campbell begins a new chapter in Seattle with a chance to turn his physical gifts into an NFL career.
