
Brentford Finalize Permanent Deal for Romelle Donovan from Birmingham City
Brentford have officially secured the long-term signing of 18-year-old attacking midfielder Romelle Donovan from Birmingham City. After impressing during a loan spell with Brentford B that began in February, Donovan has now committed to a five-year contract with the option of an additional year.
During the second half of the 2024/25 season, Donovan made a significant impact with Brentford B, tallying 11 goals and 10 assists across 15 appearances. His standout performances have earned him a place in Brentford’s first-team squad under manager Thomas Frank for the upcoming 2025/26 season.
Phil Giles, Brentford’s director of football, praised Donovan’s rapid development:
“When Romelle arrived on loan in January, we knew he had potential, but he has surpassed our expectations. His contributions for the B team were exceptional, and his attitude in training has been excellent. He’s earned his spot with the first team, and we look forward to seeing him progress further.”
Before joining Brentford B, Donovan spent the first half of the 2024/25 campaign on loan at League One side Burton Albion. There, he made nine appearances and scored his first senior goal during a 5-2 win over Northampton Town in the Football League Trophy.
In addition to his club experience, Donovan has gained international recognition, representing England at the U18 and U19 levels. He also made 10 senior appearances for Birmingham City during the 2023/24 season, playing in both the Championship and the FA Cup.
The young midfielder’s combination of creativity, goal-scoring ability, and work ethic has made him one of the standout prospects in Brentford’s development system. With his promotion to the first team, the club is hopeful that Donovan will continue his upward trajectory and eventually contribute regularly in Premier League action.
