Hunter Dekkers Signs with New Orleans Saints as Undrafted Free Agent
The New Orleans Saints have added a new name to their quarterback room, signing Hunter Dekkers as an undrafted free agent on Wednesday. The former Iowa State signal-caller is looking to revive his football journey and earn a place in the NFL, potentially starting with a spot on the Saints’ practice squad.
Dekkers showcased his skills most notably during the 2022 college football season at Iowa State, where he took over as the Cyclones’ starting quarterback. In that campaign, he completed 302 of 457 pass attempts, totaling 3,044 passing yards. He threw 19 touchdowns but also struggled at times, finishing with 14 interceptions. Despite the inconsistency, Dekkers demonstrated solid arm talent and the ability to move the ball downfield effectively.
After the 2022 season, Dekkers’ career took an unexpected turn. In 2024, he found himself playing at the junior college level, a move that helped him stay active and in shape while continuing to develop his game. Though it was a step down from Big 12 competition, the junior college experience allowed him to stay connected to the sport and prepare for another opportunity at the professional level.
The Saints, meanwhile, are in a transitional phase at the quarterback position. With no firmly established long-term starter and questions surrounding the current depth chart, the team is exploring all options to build a more competitive group under center. This opens the door for Dekkers, who brings a mix of size, experience, and potential, to compete for a developmental role.
At 6-foot-3 and over 230 pounds, Dekkers has the physical attributes NFL teams look for in a quarterback. His frame, combined with a strong arm and a decent command of offensive schemes, makes him an intriguing project for a coaching staff that has been known to mold raw talent. Though unlikely to compete for the starting job immediately, Dekkers will have a chance to prove himself during offseason training, rookie minicamp, and potentially preseason action.
Given his undrafted status, Dekkers will face long odds to make the final 53-man roster, but he may find a path through the practice squad. The Saints could view him as a low-risk, developmental option who can grow within their system and potentially contribute down the line.
