Breaking News: Colts QB Anthony Richardson is out for the foreseeable future with a reaggravated shoulder injury

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is once again facing an extended stint on the sidelines after reaggravating the same shoulder that derailed his promising rookie campaign. The team confirmed on Thursday that Richardson will be out for the foreseeable future after suffering the injury in Sunday’s game, a troubling setback for a player the Colts view as the face of their franchise.

Richardson, 22, exited the game late in the second quarter after taking a hit on a designed run. Though he initially walked off under his own power, trainers quickly ruled him out, and subsequent tests revealed damage to the AC joint in his right shoulder — the same shoulder he had surgery on in 2023. Sources within the organization say the injury is “concerningly similar” to the one that cut short his rookie season, and the team is weighing its options on whether he’ll require another procedure or an extended rehab period.

This news is a tough blow for Indianapolis, who saw glimpses of Richardson’s elite potential earlier this season. Through five games, he had accounted for 11 total touchdowns (7 passing, 4 rushing) and was completing 64% of his passes — a marked improvement over his rookie numbers. His dual-threat ability gave the Colts’ offense a dynamic edge, and his leadership had begun to galvanize a young locker room.

Veteran backup Gardner Minshew is expected to take over the starting role in the interim. Minshew has proven to be a capable stopgap in previous seasons, but he lacks Richardson’s explosive upside, especially in the run game. The Colts sit at 3–2 and remain in the thick of the AFC South race, but Richardson’s absence threatens to shift their offensive identity and playoff aspirations.

For the Colts and their fans, this is not just about the 2025 season — it’s about preserving the future of a franchise quarterback. While no timeline has been officially announced, all signs point toward a cautious approach as Indianapolis tries to ensure that their young star doesn’t turn a nagging injury into a career-altering one.
