Everton are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Argentine right-back Gonzalo Montiel, with sources suggesting the transfer is at the final stages of negotiation. The 27-year-old, who scored the decisive penalty in the 2022 World Cup final to seal Argentina’s triumph, could be the latest addition to Sean Dyche’s squad as the Toffees aim to solidify their backline ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
Montiel, currently contracted to Sevilla, spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest, where he made 19 appearances across all competitions. His blend of defensive tenacity and attacking contributions from the right flank has reportedly impressed Everton’s scouting department, prompting them to act swiftly as they seek a long-term solution at right-back. With Seamus Coleman aging and Nathan Patterson struggling with injuries, the position has become a growing concern for Dyche.
Negotiations are believed to have advanced significantly in recent days, with Everton making formal enquiries and Sevilla open to a permanent transfer. The Spanish club is reportedly holding out for a fee in the region of £9 million, a figure Everton may be willing to meet amid their summer rebuild.
Montiel’s pedigree is unquestionable. In addition to his World Cup heroics, he played a pivotal role in Sevilla’s 2023 Europa League triumph and boasts experience in both La Liga and the Premier League. His composure under pressure, set-piece ability, and work rate make him an ideal fit for Dyche’s pragmatic system.
The Toffees are expected to face competition from clubs in Spain and Germany, including Borussia Dortmund, but Montiel is believed to be open to a Premier League return. Should the deal be finalized, it would represent a major coup for Everton and a clear statement of intent ahead of the new campaign.
