The Seattle Mariners have made a bold and unprecedented move by locking in one of their top young prospects, Colt Emerson, to a massive long-term deal before he has even appeared in a Major League Baseball game.
According to reports confirmed Tuesday, the 20-year-old shortstop has agreed to an eight-year contract worth $95 million, pending a physical. This agreement sets a new benchmark in baseball, becoming the largest contract ever awarded to a player with zero MLB service time. It surpasses the previous record held by Jackson Chourio, who signed an $82 million, eight-year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2023 Winter Meetings.
The contract is not only historic in size but also in structure. It includes a full no-trade clause, ensuring Emerson has significant control over his future. Additionally, the deal features a club option for a ninth season, along with performance-based incentives and salary escalators that could raise the total value to over $130 million, as noted by the Seattle Times. This shows the Mariners’ confidence in Emerson’s long-term potential and their willingness to invest heavily in his development early.
Emerson, who was selected in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft, has quickly risen through the minor league ranks. He is currently ranked as the No. 7 overall prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline, highlighting his elite status among young players. Scouts have consistently praised his offensive abilities, describing him as one of the most polished hitters in the minor leagues.
His rapid progress has been impressive. By the end of the 2025 season, Emerson had advanced to Triple-A Tacoma, where he made an immediate impact. In a brief six-game stint with the Rainiers, he posted an outstanding 1.000 OPS, recording five hits and a home run. His performance during spring training further reinforced his potential, as he delivered an .828 OPS with two home runs and eight RBIs against major league competition.
Beyond his offensive production, Emerson has also demonstrated strong defensive skills. While primarily a shortstop, he has shown versatility by taking reps at third base, giving the Mariners additional flexibility when shaping their future lineup. This adaptability only adds to his value as a cornerstone player.
Despite the lucrative contract, Emerson is expected to begin the upcoming season in Triple-A Tacoma, continuing his development before making his MLB debut. The Mariners appear to be positioning him as the long-term successor to veteran shortstop J.P. Crawford, who is set to become a free agent after the season. Emerson is widely viewed as the franchise’s future at the position.
Seattle’s strategy of investing early in young talent is not entirely new. In 2019, the organization signed former first-round pick Evan White to a six-year, $24 million extension before he even reached Triple-A. While White initially showed promise—winning a Gold Glove in 2020—his career was ultimately derailed by injuries, and he was out of the majors within a couple of years.
Even with that cautionary example, the Mariners are clearly willing to take another calculated risk. By securing Emerson early, they are betting on his talent and upside, hoping he will develop into a cornerstone player for years to come.
