Good News: Talented No. 1 forward announces return to Auburn for sophomore season after big NIT

Auburn basketball received a major boost for next season as forward Sebastian Williams-Adams has officially announced his return for his sophomore campaign. After making a strong impact as a freshman, his decision provides stability and optimism for a Tigers team looking to build on recent success.

Williams-Adams played a key role in Auburn’s National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championship run, particularly in the title game against Tulsa. In that matchup, he delivered a solid performance with 13 points, along with three rebounds and two steals, helping the Tigers rally late and secure a 92-86 overtime victory. His contributions in high-pressure moments highlighted both his composure and growing importance to the team.

With head coach Steven Pearl entering his second season, Williams-Adams is expected to be a cornerstone of Auburn’s plans moving forward. His return ensures that the Tigers retain one of their most versatile and reliable players, especially on the defensive end of the floor.

During his freshman season, the Houston native made an immediate impact. He set a new program record for steals by a freshman with 47, showcasing his defensive instincts and ability to disrupt opposing offenses. Additionally, he logged 1,039 minutes over the course of the season, ranking third all-time among Auburn freshmen in total playing time. This level of trust from the coaching staff underscores his importance to the team.

Williams-Adams also proved to be a dependable contributor offensively. He recorded 10 games in which he scored in double figures and reached a career-high of 15 points on two separate occasions. One of his most impressive outings came in the NIT second round against Seattle, where he scored 15 points while shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the field. Interestingly, that performance matched the 15 points he scored in his college debut against Bethune-Cookman, demonstrating his ability to deliver in both early and crucial moments.

Over the course of the season, Williams-Adams appeared in all 38 games for Auburn, averaging 7.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while playing 27.3 minutes per contest. His all-around contributions made him a valuable presence on both ends of the court.

Coming out of high school, Williams-Adams was a highly regarded recruit. He was rated as a four-star prospect and ranked as the No. 12 power forward in his class after playing at St. John’s School in Houston, Texas. His strong freshman season suggests he is beginning to live up to that potential and could take an even bigger step forward next year.

His return also comes at a time when Auburn’s roster is undergoing changes. Teammates Kevin Overton and Simon Walker have also confirmed they will be back, providing some continuity. However, rising sophomores Filip Jovic and Kaden Magwood have entered the transfer portal, leaving some uncertainty within the lineup.

The Tigers are still awaiting decisions from other key players, including Tahaad Pettiford and Elyjah Freeman. Pettiford, in particular, would be a significant returnee after finishing second on the team in scoring last season with an average of 15.4 points per game.

With the transfer portal window closing on April 21, Auburn’s roster situation will soon become clearer. For now, Williams-Adams’ decision to return stands out as a major positive, giving the Tigers a strong foundation as they prepare for the upcoming season.
