The Kentucky Wildcats have continued expanding their recruiting efforts in the 2027 class, recently extending an offer to one of the most highly regarded young guards in the country, King Gibson. The move comes after a productive weekend on the recruiting trail for head coach Mark Pope and his staff, as they evaluated multiple future targets across the 2027 and 2028 classes and added several new names to their recruiting board.
Gibson, who is already considered one of the premier guards in his class, publicly announced the offer on social media, expressing gratitude for the opportunity. He shared that he felt “blessed” to receive an offer from the University of Kentucky and thanked the program for its interest. The announcement further elevated his profile, as Kentucky remains one of the most recognizable and competitive programs in college basketball recruiting.

The offer from Kentucky adds to an already impressive list of high-major programs pursuing Gibson. Just days before Kentucky’s offer, he also received interest from John Calipari and the Arkansas Razorbacks, strengthening an offer sheet that already includes programs such as North Carolina, Michigan, and Houston. His recruitment is quickly becoming one of the most closely watched in the 2027 cycle due to the number of elite schools involved and his rising national ranking.
So far, Gibson has begun taking unofficial visits to evaluate his options more closely. He has already visited Michigan and NC State, and he is reportedly planning additional trips in the near future, including potential visits to Kentucky, UConn, and Arkansas. These upcoming visits are expected to play a significant role in shaping his recruitment as programs begin to separate themselves in his evaluation process.
Among the schools involved, Michigan has been viewed by some analysts as an early leader in his recruitment. The Wolverines have already hosted him on campus, and there is also a personal connection that could work in their favor. Michigan assistant coach Drew Williamson shares a hometown connection with Gibson, as both are from Burlington, North Carolina. That relationship has helped strengthen the bond between the player and the program early in the process.
Despite Michigan’s perceived advantage, Kentucky has remained heavily involved in Gibson’s recruitment since last summer. The Wildcats have maintained consistent communication even through coaching staff changes, showing a long-term interest in the talented guard. Assistant coach Mo Williams has also played a key role in Kentucky’s recruitment of Gibson, attending multiple games during the Nike EYBL session in Memphis. Williams’ background as a former NBA guard and his reputation for developing backcourt players have been highlighted as important factors in Kentucky’s pitch.
Recruiting analysts currently rank Gibson as the No. 7 overall player in the 2027 class and the No. 2 combo guard nationally according to 247Sports. While he is officially labeled as a combo guard, Kentucky views him primarily as a point guard due to his ability to control the offense. He has shown strong scoring instincts in grassroots competition, particularly on the EYBL circuit, but he also demonstrates excellent vision, passing ability, and composure with the ball in his hands.
As the recruitment process continues, Kentucky is expected to remain aggressive in pursuing Gibson, as the staff casts a wide net across multiple top prospects in his class. With several elite programs involved and more visits on the horizon, his recruitment is shaping up to be one of the most competitive battles in the 2027 cycle.
