The Kentucky Wildcats added a major piece to their future recruiting class on Sunday when highly regarded five-star prospect Ryan Hampton announced his commitment to the program. The talented wing player, who currently attends DME Academy in Florida, chose Kentucky after considering several other schools and has quickly become one of the most significant additions to the Wildcats’ 2027 recruiting class.

Standing 6-foot-6, Hampton is regarded as one of the premier prospects in the nation. According to recruiting rankings from 247Sports, he is currently listed as the No. 6 overall player in the Class of 2027. His combination of size, athleticism, scoring ability, and versatility has made him one of the most sought-after young players in the country.
Hampton comes from a family with strong basketball ties. He is the younger brother of RJ Hampton, a former first-round NBA Draft selection who gained national attention as a top recruit before beginning his professional career. Ryan has followed a similar path, earning recognition as one of the elite prospects in his age group while continuing to develop his game against high-level competition.
Before making his commitment, Hampton explored several options and took visits to other programs, including Nebraska and NC State. Despite interest from multiple schools, Kentucky ultimately emerged as the clear favorite. Hampton explained that the relationships he built with the Wildcats’ coaching staff played a major role in his decision.
According to Hampton, head coach Mark Pope and assistant coach Mo Williams presented a vision that aligned perfectly with his long-term goals. He believes the Kentucky coaching staff has a detailed plan for helping him maximize his potential both on the basketball court and in life beyond the game. Their confidence in his abilities and commitment to his development helped convince him that Lexington was the right destination.
Hampton emphasized that Kentucky offers the type of competitive environment he has been seeking. He expressed excitement about embracing the challenges that come with playing for one of college basketball’s most prestigious programs. The opportunity to compete at a high level, develop under experienced coaches, and prepare for future professional opportunities were all factors that influenced his choice.
The talented wing also described Kentucky as feeling like home. After years of hard work and dedication, he believes he has found the ideal place to continue his basketball journey. Hampton acknowledged the support he has received from his family throughout the recruiting process and expressed gratitude for the opportunities that have brought him to this point. While reaching this milestone is significant, he remains focused on future achievements and believes his best basketball is still ahead of him.
Hampton recently transferred to DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida, ahead of the 2025-26 season. Prior to making the move, he played at Dynamic Prep in Irving, Texas, where he established himself as one of the nation’s top young prospects. The change in schools provided him with another opportunity to compete against elite talent and continue his development.
As Kentucky’s first commitment in the 2027 recruiting class, Hampton gives the Wildcats a strong foundation for the future. His commitment represents an important recruiting victory for Mark Pope and his staff as they continue building a program capable of competing for championships in the years ahead.
