Kentucky Basketball Receives Prediction to Land Nikola Kusturica
Kentucky basketball could be closing in on another major recruiting victory as Mark Pope continues shaping the Wildcats’ 2026-27 roster. After what looked like a difficult start to the offseason, Kentucky has gained momentum, and the latest development involving Serbian prospect Nikola Kusturica could make the class even more exciting.
Kusturica is a 6-foot-9 wing from Serbia who has already attracted serious attention from NBA scouts. Although he is still young, his talent, size and production have made him one of the more intriguing international prospects in his age group. Because he recently turned 17, he is expected to spend two seasons in college basketball before becoming eligible for the NBA Draft. That makes his college choice especially important, as whichever program lands him could have a potential star for multiple seasons.
Big Blue Nation recently learned that Kentucky had entered the race for Kusturica and was making a strong push to bring him to Lexington. At first, Gonzaga appeared to be in the best position. The Bulldogs had been involved with him for a longer period and also seemed to have a more immediate roster need. For that reason, many believed Gonzaga had the advantage.
However, the recruitment may now be moving in Kentucky’s direction. Travis Branham of 247 Sports has logged a prediction for the Wildcats to land Kusturica, giving it a confidence level of seven. That prediction is a strong sign that Kentucky has made real progress and could now be the team to beat.
If Kentucky lands Kusturica, it would be a major late addition for Pope and his staff. The Wildcats are already trying to finish the roster on a strong note, and adding a player with Kusturica’s long-term upside would be a huge boost. He is not just another international recruit. He is viewed as a future NBA talent with the kind of skill set that could translate quickly to the college game.
Kusturica made a major statement during the 2025 FIBA U16 EuroBasket Tournament. He averaged 20 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game while shooting 49.5 percent from the field. He also connected on 30.8 percent of his three-point attempts while playing 25.6 minutes per game. His all-around performance earned him tournament MVP honors and helped raise his profile even higher.
His NBA projection adds even more excitement. NBA Draft Room currently lists Kusturica as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2028 NBA Draft. That kind of projection shows how highly scouts already view his future. With two college seasons ahead of him before he can enter the draft, he has the chance to develop into one of the top players in college basketball.
Now, Kentucky may be in position to win the race for his commitment. If Kusturica chooses the Wildcats, it would give Mark Pope another high-upside talent and provide Kentucky with a player who could become a major piece of the program before eventually heading to the NBA.
