Jarren Duran feared Red Sox would release him at trade deadline
Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran admitted that he genuinely believed the team might release him around the MLB trade deadline because of his difficult 2026 season.
Speaking with The Boston Globe, Duran said he felt he was “the worst player in MLB statistically” and had been looking closely at his numbers during his slump.
Despite those concerns, Boston decided to keep Duran after making several moves at the deadline. Duran said he was grateful for the opportunity to remain with the organization and help the Red Sox make a playoff push.

The comments came after a challenging stretch offensively. Reports had Duran around a .200 batting average with 15 home runs and a .613 OPS shortly after the deadline. However, his “worst player” description was clearly an expression of frustration rather than an objective ranking—his season was poor by his standards, but he was not literally the worst qualified player in MLB.
There were also encouraging signs immediately afterward. Duran hit a home run in Boston’s 14–2 victory over the White Sox, showing why the Red Sox were willing to keep him despite his struggles.
