Bengals vs. Buccaneers Prediction — 2026 NFL Week 1

The Cincinnati Bengals host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Paycor Stadium, in one of the more intriguing Week 1 matchups. Cincinnati enters the regular season with significant expectations around Joe Burrow and an offense built to score points, while Tampa Bay arrives with confidence behind Baker Mayfield and a defense that could make this a much tougher game than the preseason results suggest.

My prediction: Bengals 27, Buccaneers 24.

I give Cincinnati roughly a 60–63% chance to win, with Tampa Bay having a legitimate opportunity to pull off the upset.

Why the Bengals have the edge

The biggest reason I lean toward Cincinnati is the combination of home-field advantage, Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and an improving defense.

The Bengals have not reached the playoffs since their AFC Championship Game run, so there is considerable pressure on Zac Taylor and the organization to turn their talent into results. Cincinnati finished the 2025 season 6–11, but the team has made significant changes on defense heading into 2026.

More importantly, Cincinnati finished the preseason 3–0, including a convincing 30–13 victory over Philadelphia. The Bengals produced 420 total yards in that game, averaged 6.6 yards per play and scored 21 fourth-quarter points.

Obviously, preseason statistics need to be treated carefully because many starters do not play significant snaps. Still, the overall performance is encouraging.

Joe Burrow is the difference-maker

Whenever Burrow is healthy, Cincinnati possesses one of the NFL’s most dangerous passing attacks.

Burrow’s ability to read defenses, deliver accurate throws under pressure and make difficult third-down conversions gives Cincinnati an advantage against most opponents. Tampa Bay’s defense will have to find ways to pressure him without giving Chase and Cincinnati’s other receivers opportunities downfield.

That is easier said than done.

If Burrow gets time in the pocket, Cincinnati could have a very productive afternoon.

Ja’Marr Chase injury situation

One of the biggest developments heading into the game is the status of Ja’Marr Chase.

Chase recently suffered a knee hyperextension during practice. He subsequently said he felt confident about the injury and indicated that he could have played if Cincinnati had a game, but the Bengals wisely kept their starters out of the preseason finale.

That situation deserves monitoring throughout the week.

If Chase is completely healthy, Cincinnati’s offensive ceiling rises considerably. He is coming off a season in which he led the NFL with 185 targets, 125 receptions, 1,412 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, earning another first-team All-Pro selection.

A healthy Chase forces Tampa Bay to devote significant attention to him. That can create opportunities for Cincinnati’s other receivers and tight ends.

If Chase is limited, however, I would reduce my confidence in Cincinnati.

Tampa Bay should not be underestimated

Although I am picking Cincinnati, I don’t expect Tampa Bay to simply show up and lose.

The Buccaneers have a veteran quarterback in Baker Mayfield, and Mayfield has already made it clear that he believes Tampa Bay can surprise people in 2026.

NFL

That confidence matters because Tampa Bay has enough offensive talent to exploit weaknesses in Cincinnati’s defense.

The Bengals’ defense has been one of the team’s biggest concerns in recent seasons. Cincinnati’s offense can put enormous pressure on opponents, but if the defense gives up explosive plays, Tampa Bay could stay in the game for four quarters.

That is exactly why I don’t see this as a comfortable Bengals victory.

Baker Mayfield vs. Cincinnati’s defense

Mayfield is at his best when he can play aggressively and keep the offense moving.

Against Cincinnati, Tampa Bay should look to establish the running game early and then use play-action to create opportunities downfield.

The Bengals cannot allow Mayfield to sit comfortably in the pocket.

If Cincinnati can force Tampa Bay into obvious passing situations, its defensive line and secondary should have more opportunities to make plays.

But if Tampa Bay stays balanced, Mayfield could have a big afternoon.

This is probably the most important matchup for the Buccaneers.

Tampa Bay’s offensive challenge

The Buccaneers struggled badly in their preseason finale against Jacksonville, losing 19–0 while producing only 87 total yards. Tampa Bay averaged just 1.9 yards per play and committed one turnover.

SportsData

However, I wouldn’t put too much weight on that performance.

Preseason games are primarily about roster evaluation, and Tampa Bay’s Week 1 offense will look considerably different.

The Buccaneers also have several weeks to prepare specifically for Cincinnati.

Therefore, the 19–0 preseason defeat shouldn’t be interpreted as evidence that Tampa Bay’s regular-season offense will be poor.

Vita Vea could be crucial

One of the most important players for Tampa Bay is defensive tackle Vita Vea.

His presence in the middle of the defensive line could create problems for Cincinnati’s running game and interior pass protection. Recent reporting indicates that Vea’s contract situation was resolved, making his availability for Week 1 much more likely.

That is a majo r factor.

If Tampa Bay can generate pressure without constantly blitzing, it can devote additional defenders to containing Chase and Cincinnati’s passing attack.

Vea’s ability to collapse the pocket from the interior could also disrupt Burrow’s rhythm.

Cincinnati’s offensive line

This is another area I’ll be watching closely.

Burrow is excellent, but even an elite quarterback can struggle when pressure arrives quickly.

Tampa Bay will try to create pressure with its defensive front while keeping enough players in coverage to prevent Cincinnati from hitting explosive passes.

The Bengals’ best strategy may be to establish the run early.

A productive running game would force Tampa Bay’s defense to respect play-action and prevent the Buccaneers from simply attacking Burrow on every passing down.

The Cincinnati defense is the wild card

The Bengals have invested heavily in improving their defense, and preseason results provided some encouraging signs.

Cincinnati allowed only 36 points across three preseason games, while the defensive unit showed improved discipline and energy under new defensive coordinator Al Golden.

Cincy Jungle

That doesn’t guarantee the defense will suddenly become elite.

Regular-season offenses are much more dangerous than preseason units.

Still, if Cincinnati’s defense is even average in 2026, the Bengals could be significantly better than they were last season because of the offensive firepower they possess.

Special teams could decide a close game

Don’t overlook special teams.

Cincinnati kicker Evan McPherson has been impressive during training camp and preseason. He made long-distance kicks of 56 and 58 yards during the preseason and has looked increasingly confident.

Cincy Jungle

In a game projected to be decided by three points, that matters.

If Cincinnati gets stalled inside the red zone, McPherson gives the Bengals the ability to turn possessions into points.

A 55-yard field goal that would be considered risky for some teams is much more realistic with McPherson.

That could ultimately be the difference.

Recent head-to-head history

Historically, Tampa Bay has a slight advantage in this series.

The Buccaneers lead the all-time series 7–6, but Cincinnati has won the last three meetings. The most recent Bengals victory came in 2022.

Cincinnati Bengals

Of course, history is less important than current rosters, but it does demonstrate that Cincinnati has recently had success against Tampa Bay.

What could go wrong for Cincinnati?

There are several ways the Buccaneers can win.

1. Burrow gets pressured

If Tampa Bay’s defensive line consistently gets into the backfield, Cincinnati could struggle.

2. Chase isn’t 100%

If Chase’s knee prevents him from being at full strength, Tampa Bay can devote more resources to the rest of Cincinnati’s passing game.

3. Tampa Bay wins the turnover battle

Week 1 games can be unpredictable. A couple of turnovers can completely change the outcome.

4. Cincinnati’s defense struggles

If Mayfield and the Buccaneers consistently produce explosive plays, Cincinnati could be forced into a shootout.

5. Tampa Bay controls the clock

If the Buccaneers establish the running game and keep Burrow on the sideline, they can reduce Cincinnati’s offensive opportunities.

What could go wrong for Tampa Bay?

The biggest danger is allowing Cincinnati’s offense to start fast.

Imagine Burrow finding Chase for an early 40-yard completion, followed by a touchdown drive.

Suddenly Tampa Bay has to play from behind.

That’s when the Bengals become extremely difficult to defend.

Cincinnati can attack horizontally with short throws, vertically with Chase, and through the middle with its other receiving options.

If Tampa Bay falls behind by two scores, the Buccaneers may have to become one-dimensional.

That would play directly into Cincinnati’s hands.

Prediction

I expect this to be a competitive game.

Tampa Bay should be able to move the football, particularly if Mayfield is efficient and the Buccaneers can establish their running game.

But Cincinnati has the most important advantage in the matchup: Joe Burrow playing at home with an explosive group of offensive weapons.

I expect the Bengals to take some early shots downfield, while Tampa Bay tries to slow the game down and attack Cincinnati’s defense.

The first half could be close.

By the fourth quarter, however, I expect Burrow to make one or two critical throws that Tampa Bay cannot answer.

Final score

Cincinnati Bengals 27, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24

My win probability

Bengals: 62%

Buccaneers: 38%

My prediction against the spread

If Cincinnati is around -2.5 to -3, I lean Bengals.

If the line moves to Cincinnati -4.5 or higher, I become much more cautious because Tampa Bay has enough talent to keep this game within one score.

Early market projections have generally favored Cincinnati, with one recent expert model putting the Bengals at about 63% to win and projecting a 27–24 final score.

Final verdict

Pick: Cincinnati Bengals

Score prediction: Bengals 27, Buccaneers 24

Confidence: 6.5/10

I expect a close, entertaining opener rather than a blowout. Tampa Bay has enough defensive talent and quarterback experience to make Cincinnati work for the victory, but the combination of Burrow, Chase, home-field advantage, improved defensive personnel and McPherson’s kicking ability gives the Bengals the slight edge.

The biggest thing to monitor before kickoff is Ja’Marr Chase’s knee. If he enters the game healthy and unrestricted, I would be more comfortable with Cincinnati. If he is limited or unexpectedly ruled out, Tampa Bay’s chances increase substantially.

Ultimately, I’m taking the Bengals to start 2026 with a 27–24 victory, but I expect the Buccaneers to be competitive until the final minutes.
