Boston Red Sox Quickly Announce Trevor Story Decision Before Royals Series

The Boston Red Sox made an important decision involving Trevor Story as they prepared for their three-game series against the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park.

Story was dropped to fifth in Boston’s batting order for the series opener, with Wilyer Abreu moving into the cleanup spot. The decision came at an important point in the season, with Boston fighting to secure its postseason position.

Story has been an important piece for the Red Sox since returning from the injured list. MLB’s player page confirms that Boston activated him from the 60-day injured list on August 16 after a rehab assignment.

Why the decision matters

Moving Story down the order does not necessarily indicate that Boston has lost confidence in him. Instead, it appears to be a lineup adjustment designed to give the offense a better balance heading into a critical September stretch.

Story has also shown that he can still produce in important situations. Earlier in September, he recorded three hits and scored twice in Boston’s 5-0 victory over Baltimore.

The Red Sox entered the Royals series at 80-67, firmly in the American League Wild Card race.  But the urgency increased after Kansas City won Friday’s opener 3-2, dropping Boston to 80-68.

For Story, the biggest objective now is consistency. Boston doesn’t necessarily need him to carry the offense; it needs him to provide quality at-bats, solid defense and timely production while the club makes its postseason push.

The lineup change could therefore be less about Story individually and more about maximizing Boston’s overall offensive production.

With the postseason race tightening, every decision involving the Red Sox lineup carries extra weight. Story’s new position in the batting order will be something to watch closely throughout the remainder of the Royals series.
