Mariners Make Major Roster Move After Disappointing Injury Development
The Seattle Mariners have been forced into another roster change after suffering an unfortunate injury setback involving one of their relief pitchers.
Seattle entered the 2026 season with high expectations following a remarkable 2025 campaign in which the club came within one victory of reaching its first-ever World Series. However, things have been much more inconsistent this year, with the Mariners struggling to establish themselves as a clear contender.
Heading into Friday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays, Seattle carried a 56-60 record and remained around the .500 mark. Despite their disappointing overall performance, the Mariners are still within reach of the American League West race. The division has been relatively open this season, meaning Seattle still has an opportunity to turn things around during the remaining weeks of the regular season.
However, the team received another setback shortly before Friday’s game.
The Mariners announced that right-handed pitcher Cole Wilcox has been placed on the 15-day injured list after suffering a left oblique strain. To fill his spot on the active roster, Seattle recalled right-handed pitcher Nick Davila from Triple-A.
Wilcox reportedly suffered the injury during his most recent appearance against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. It was a difficult outing for the right-hander, as he surrendered four runs while managing to record only two outs.
The rough performance also pushed Wilcox’s season ERA to 4.00. Nevertheless, his importance to Seattle’s bullpen goes beyond that number. Before Thursday’s outing, Wilcox had generally been one of the more reliable relief options available to manager Dan Wilson, making his absence particularly frustrating at this stage of the season.
The Mariners are entering a crucial stretch of the campaign, and dependable bullpen arms could become extremely valuable as the club attempts to stay alive in the postseason race. Losing Wilcox for at least 15 days creates another challenge for a pitching staff that has already been tested throughout the season.
Seattle will now turn to Davila in hopes that he can provide some stability.
Davila has already appeared for the Mariners during the 2026 campaign and has posted a respectable 3.57 ERA over 20 major-league appearances. Those numbers suggest that he can potentially contribute immediately, but there are also some concerns surrounding his performance.
His command has been an issue at the major-league level. Davila has issued 11 walks while recording only nine strikeouts in his 20 appearances. That lack of strikeout production combined with the number of free passes ultimately contributed to his return to the minor leagues.
Now, however, Davila has another opportunity to prove himself in Seattle’s bullpen.
For the Mariners, the timing of Wilcox’s injury could hardly be worse. With the club still within striking distance of the AL West lead, every dependable pitcher matters. The team will hope Davila can step up while Wilcox recovers and help stabilize a bullpen that has played an important role in keeping Seattle competitive.
The Mariners now face another test as they attempt to overcome the latest injury setback and make a late-season push toward the postseason.
