Cardinals Set to Give Hunter Dobbins Spot Start in Series Against Pirates
The St. Louis Cardinals are preparing for a demanding stretch of their schedule as they open a four-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night, and the club is already making adjustments to manage its pitching staff during the busy run.
With the Cardinals currently in the middle of an intense stretch featuring 17 games in 17 consecutive days, the organization has decided to add fresh pitching help from Triple-A in an effort to preserve the health and effectiveness of its rotation. As part of that plan, manager Oli Marmol announced that right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins will be called upon to make a spot start against Pittsburgh on Thursday.
The outing will mark Dobbins’ first appearance for St. Louis since joining the organization during the offseason in a trade with the Boston Red Sox, a deal that sent veteran catcher Willson Contreras to Boston. Although Dobbins was viewed as one of the more intriguing arms acquired in the trade, he has yet to make his Cardinals debut after suffering a torn right ACL last July, an injury that ended his 2025 campaign prematurely.
Now fully healthy and back on the mound, Dobbins is set for his long-awaited debut and a major opportunity to prove himself at the big-league level.
Before his injury, Dobbins showed flashes of promise during his time with Boston. In 13 appearances, including 11 starts, the right-hander posted a 4.13 ERA while allowing 61 hits across 61 innings of work. He demonstrated solid control throughout those outings, walking only 6.6 percent of opposing hitters. However, one area where improvement was needed was his ability to miss bats, as he recorded a strikeout rate of just 17.6 percent.
Since returning to action this season, Dobbins has shown some progress in that department during his time in Triple-A. Over five starts, he has increased his strikeout rate to 19.8 percent, suggesting that his stuff may be improving as he regains full strength after the knee injury.
Still, Thursday’s assignment against the Pirates will represent his toughest challenge yet this season and a true test of how prepared he is to contribute in the majors.
For the Cardinals, Dobbins’ promotion is about more than simply covering innings during a packed schedule. The team is evaluating whether the 26-year-old can emerge as a reliable depth option for the rotation moving forward. If he performs well in his spot start, he could position himself for additional opportunities later in the season, particularly if injuries or workload concerns continue to impact the pitching staff.
The Cardinals have emphasized organizational depth throughout the year, and Dobbins’ arrival offers another chance for the front office to assess one of its key offseason acquisitions in live major league action.
As St. Louis looks to remain competitive during a surprisingly strong start to the 2026 season, contributions from depth pieces like Dobbins could become increasingly important. The club has exceeded many preseason expectations so far, and maintaining that momentum will require support from every level of the roster.
Thursday night could be the beginning of a bigger role for Dobbins if he takes advantage of the opportunity. For now, all eyes will be on the right-hander as he makes his Cardinals debut against Pittsburgh in what could be a significant moment for both his career and St. Louis’ pitching plans moving forward.
