The Philadelphia Phillies continued making moves to strengthen their organization this week as they wrapped up a home series against the Oakland Athletics. Before Thursday night’s series finale, Philadelphia announced the addition of right-handed pitcher , claiming him off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

The Phillies entered Thursday’s matchup with momentum after securing a 6-3 victory over the Athletics on Wednesday. That win placed the club in position to complete a three-game sweep at Citizens Bank Park while continuing a recent stretch of improved play after a difficult beginning to the season.
Ahead of the game, the organization confirmed the roster move through social media, announcing that Holman had officially joined the franchise. The Phillies also revealed that the right-hander would immediately be optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he will continue developing and provide pitching depth for the organization.
Holman originally entered professional baseball after being selected in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB Draft. Since then, he has steadily worked his way through the minor leagues and eventually reached the majors with the Athletics organization. Over parts of two seasons in Major League Baseball, Holman has appeared in 40 games while compiling a 5-3 record and a 4.66 earned run average.
Although Holman has not yet pitched in a major league game during the 2026 season, the Phillies clearly believe he has enough upside to warrant a closer look. At just 25 years old, he still has time to develop into a reliable bullpen arm, and Philadelphia’s front office may view him as a low-risk addition who could eventually contribute at the big league level.
Several baseball reporters and fans quickly reacted to the news after the waiver claim became official. Some highlighted Holman’s unique baseball background, including the fact that he once threw a no-hitter during the 2013 Little League World Series. Others focused on his pitching arsenal, which reportedly includes a mid-90s fastball, splitter, and slider combination that could make him an intriguing option if he refines his command and consistency.
Reporters also noted that Holman had recently been designated for assignment by Detroit when the Tigers made another roster move involving infielder Zack Short. Philadelphia quickly took advantage of the opportunity, claiming Holman before another organization could make a move.
For the Phillies, the acquisition comes during an important point in the season. The team struggled badly out of the gate and spent much of the early portion of the year trying to climb back into contention in the competitive National League East. However, recent performances suggest the club may finally be finding some rhythm.
Philadelphia has gone 8-2 over its last 10 games, helping improve its overall record to 17-20 through 37 contests. While still sitting in third place in the division, the Phillies have begun building momentum and appear determined to remain competitive as the season progresses.
After concluding the Athletics series, the Phillies will continue their homestand with another matchup beginning Friday against the Colorado Rockies. Meanwhile, Holman will report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he will attempt to work his way into the Phillies’ future plans and possibly earn another shot in the major leagues later this season.
