Ryan Hampton has explained the reasons behind his commitment to the Kentucky Wildcats, highlighting the influence of the coaching staff—especially assistant coach Mo Williams—in helping him finalize his decision.
The Kentucky basketball program continues to build strong momentum on the recruiting trail. Under head coach Mark Pope, the Wildcats have been assembling an impressive foundation for the future. Over the past stretch, the program has added key pieces such as Milan Momcilovic and successfully retained Malachi Moreno, while also securing its highest-ranked high school commitment under Pope’s leadership.

That latest major addition came on Sunday morning when Ryan Hampton, a highly regarded top-10 prospect in the 2027 recruiting class, announced his commitment to Kentucky. The announcement came shortly after Hampton completed an official weekend visit to the Lexington campus, where he spent time with the coaching staff and got a closer look at the program’s long-term vision.
Hampton, a native of Daytona Beach, Florida, expressed strong appreciation for how the Kentucky staff presented a clear development plan tailored to his goals. In comments shared through recruiting coverage with On3 reporter Joe Tipton and Rivals, Hampton emphasized that both Coach Pope and assistant coach Mo Williams played major roles in his decision-making process.
“I chose Kentucky because of Coach Pope and Coach Mo Williams,” Hampton said. “They showed me a vision and a plan for me to reach my ultimate dreams and goals. They will challenge me to be the best I can be on and off the court.”
The 6-foot-6, 190-pound small forward has seen his recruitment stock rise significantly in recent months. Competing on the EYBL circuit with the Nightrydas, Hampton has emerged as one of the most productive young wings in his class. In limited action with his new team, he has averaged approximately 21 points and 5.5 rebounds per game across his first four appearances, showing both scoring ability and versatility on the wing.
While Hampton credited the entire Kentucky staff for their efforts, he was especially open about the impact of Mo Williams in sealing his commitment. Williams, a former NBA guard and now a rising figure in the college coaching ranks, brought a personal connection that helped Kentucky stand out from other programs.
“Let’s be honest, Coach Williams closed the deal,” Hampton said. “He’s been a friend of my dad for a long time, so my family has trust in him.”
That existing relationship between Williams and Hampton’s family created a strong layer of comfort and familiarity throughout the recruiting process. It also reinforced Kentucky’s pitch, which combined player development, trust, and NBA-level experience within the coaching staff.
Williams’ growing reputation as a recruiter has become a major asset for Kentucky. Several recruits have reportedly responded positively to his presence, noting his professional playing background and ability to connect with guards and wings who aspire to reach the NBA.
With Hampton now in the fold, Kentucky continues to position itself as a strong contender for elite talent in future recruiting cycles. The commitment not only strengthens their 2027 outlook but also signals that the Wildcats remain aggressive in targeting top-tier prospects who fit their long-term vision.
