Auburn has secured a major addition for its 2027 recruiting class with the commitment of highly regarded edge rusher Rion Jackson.
The four-star defensive standout announced his decision on Wednesday during a commitment ceremony, ultimately choosing the Tigers over Virginia Tech. His announcement came with a dramatic twist, as Jackson initially picked up a Virginia Tech hat and even had family members display Hokies gear, before revealing Auburn as his final choice.
Jackson is considered one of the more promising pass rushers in the 2027 cycle. According to 247Sports Composite rankings, he is currently rated as the No. 371 overall prospect nationally and the No. 33 edge rusher in his class. He is also ranked as the No. 7 player in the state of Maryland, highlighting his strong regional reputation.
The Maryland native was a key target for multiple programs, with Virginia Tech seen as a strong contender due to its geographic advantage. Being much closer to home, the Hokies were widely viewed as a convenient and realistic option for Jackson. However, Auburn head coach Alex Golesh and his staff were able to overcome that proximity factor and successfully secure his commitment.
Auburn first extended a scholarship offer to Jackson in April 2025 and remained actively involved in his recruitment throughout the process. Even as the Tigers underwent coaching changes and transitioned under Golesh’s leadership, the program continued to prioritize Jackson as a key defensive target. That consistent attention ultimately paid off with his decision to join the Tigers’ future defensive unit.
With Jackson now in the fold, Auburn’s 2027 recruiting class continues to gain momentum. His commitment becomes part of a growing group that now includes 17 total pledges. The class is currently ranked No. 12 nationally according to 247Sports Composite rankings, reflecting the strong early work being done by the coaching staff.
Jackson’s addition is seen as a significant boost for Auburn’s long-term defensive plans. His athletic ability and pass-rushing potential make him an important piece for the future of the Tigers’ front seven. As the 2027 cycle continues, Auburn will look to build on this momentum and further strengthen an already promising recruiting class.
