the San Diego Padres have added former first-round pick Nick Pratto to their organization, signing the veteran first baseman to a minor-league contract as they continue to strengthen their depth throughout the system.
Pratto joins the Padres after a brief stint with the Texas Rangers organization. He had been playing for Triple-A Round Rock under a minor-league agreement before being released by Texas earlier this week. Despite showing flashes of power at the plate, the Rangers ultimately decided to move in a different direction, opening the door for San Diego to bring him aboard.
During his time with Round Rock, Pratto appeared in 26 games and posted a .237 batting average while reaching base at a .287 clip. He also delivered some notable power production, slugging .473 with five home runs. Although his overall offensive numbers were inconsistent, his ability to drive the ball and provide left-handed power remains an attractive trait for organizations seeking experienced depth at the upper levels of the minor leagues.
The 27-year-old has spent much of his professional career working to establish himself as a reliable major-league contributor. Once considered one of baseball’s more promising prospects, Pratto gained recognition for his combination of defensive ability at first base and power potential at the plate. However, translating that promise into consistent success at the highest level has proven challenging.
Pratto’s most recent major-league action came during the 2023 season. Since then, he has remained in the minor leagues, attempting to earn another opportunity in the big leagues. While he has continued to display occasional power, maintaining offensive consistency has been a hurdle throughout his professional journey.
For the Padres, the signing represents a low-risk move that could provide valuable organizational depth. Players like Pratto often serve as insurance options in the event of injuries or roster changes during the long major-league season. By adding an experienced player with previous MLB exposure, San Diego increases its flexibility while also giving Pratto another chance to work his way back into the major-league conversation.
At this stage, there is no indication that Pratto will immediately factor into the Padres’ major-league plans. Instead, he is expected to begin his tenure within the organization at the minor-league level, where he will attempt to prove that he deserves consideration for a future call-up.
The move also gives Pratto a fresh start with a new organization after his release from Texas. A change of scenery can sometimes provide an opportunity for players to rediscover their form, and the Padres will hope he can contribute both offensively and defensively within their farm system.
While expectations remain modest, Pratto’s power potential and previous experience at the major-league level make him an intriguing depth addition. If he can produce consistently and take advantage of opportunities in the minors, he could eventually work his way back onto a major-league roster. For now, the Padres have added a veteran option to their system and will see if the former top prospect can revive his career in San Diego.
