The St. Louis Cardinals could be active buyers ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline, with one former major league executive predicting the club will look to strengthen its starting rotation as it pushes for a postseason berth.
Although the trade deadline is still several weeks away, speculation around potential moves is already gaining momentum across baseball. The Cardinals have emerged as one of the teams frequently mentioned in trade discussions, particularly when it comes to improving their pitching staff.
Former MLB general manager Jim Duquette recently shared his expectations for St. Louis during an appearance on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM. Duquette, who previously served as the general manager of both the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles, believes the Cardinals are likely to pursue a starting pitcher before the deadline arrives.
According to Duquette, adding another arm to the rotation appears to be one of the organization’s top priorities as the season progresses. While St. Louis has received solid contributions from its current group of starters, the front office may view an additional experienced pitcher as a key piece in helping the team remain competitive down the stretch.
The Cardinals’ rotation has produced encouraging results this season, led by pitchers such as Dustin May, Michael McGreevy, and Kyle Leahy. May recently delivered one of the club’s best performances of the year, tossing a complete-game shutout in a 3-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on Monday. Outings like that have helped keep St. Louis firmly in the playoff race.
Despite the success of the starting staff, the bullpen has been a less consistent area. The Cardinals currently rank in the middle of the league with a 4.21 bullpen ERA, placing additional pressure on the rotation to provide quality innings on a regular basis. Strengthening the pitching staff could therefore address both short-term and long-term concerns.
Throughout the season, St. Louis has relied on a combination of veteran players and emerging young talent to remain competitive. The organization is also focused on building a sustainable pitching foundation for future seasons, making any trade deadline acquisition an important decision beyond just the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
Much of the Cardinals’ approach at the deadline will depend on their standing in the National League playoff race over the coming weeks. Entering play with a 39-31 record, St. Louis sits 4.5 games behind the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central. If the team continues to contend, management could become increasingly aggressive in seeking reinforcements.
Several names have already surfaced in trade rumors connected to the Cardinals. Reports have suggested that Dustin May and JoJo Romero could be involved in discussions, while potential pitching targets include Robbie Ray of the San Francisco Giants, Reid Detmers of the Los Angeles Angels, and Jeffrey Springs of the Athletics.
Each of those pitchers could offer value to St. Louis for different reasons. Beyond their on-field abilities, they are viewed as options who could fit the Cardinals’ financial plans while providing additional flexibility to the pitching staff.
