Phillies Part Ways With Veteran Pitcher Bryse Wilson Ahead of Nationals Series
The Philadelphia Phillies continued making adjustments to their roster following a successful weekend series against the New York Mets, announcing the departure of veteran right-handed pitcher Bryse Wilson ahead of their upcoming matchup with the Washington Nationals.
Philadelphia closed out its series against New York on a high note Sunday night, earning a convincing 6-2 victory at Citizens Bank Park. The win helped the Phillies maintain momentum as they continue their push in the National League East standings.

However, shortly after the series concluded, the organization made a notable roster move. The Phillies designated Wilson for assignment, ending what turned out to be a very brief stint with the major league club.
Earlier in the week, Philadelphia had selected Wilson’s contract from Triple-A, giving the veteran an opportunity to contribute at the big-league level. He appeared in one game for the Phillies on June 18 and delivered a solid outing, throwing two scoreless innings while keeping opposing hitters off the scoreboard.
Despite that performance, the Phillies chose to move in a different direction as they reshaped their pitching staff before beginning a road series against Washington.
According to reports, Philadelphia also optioned pitcher Max Lazar back to Triple-A. In addition, left-hander Kyle Backhus is expected to join the active roster. The club has not officially confirmed every corresponding move, but there is speculation that pitcher Alan Rangel could be called upon to provide additional innings in the near future.
Wilson’s departure adds another chapter to a professional career that has now spanned nine Major League Baseball seasons. Originally selected by the Atlanta Braves in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft, Wilson quickly developed into a promising pitching prospect within Atlanta’s organization.
Wilson’s MLB Journey
The 28-year-old spent the first several years of his major league career with the Braves before moving on to multiple organizations. Over the years, he has also pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago White Sox, and most recently the Phillies.
One of the strongest seasons of Wilson’s career came in 2023 while pitching for Milwaukee. During that campaign, he emerged as a valuable bullpen contributor, posting a perfect 6-0 record with an impressive 2.58 ERA across 53 appearances. His ability to provide reliable innings made him an important piece of the Brewers’ pitching staff that season.
Before joining Philadelphia’s major league roster this year, Wilson had been pitching at the Triple-A level. With his experience and versatility, he could attract interest from other organizations if he becomes available, although a return to the Phillies’ system also remains possible.
Phillies Building Momentum
After a sluggish start to the season, Philadelphia has significantly improved its performance over the past several weeks. The Phillies have become one of baseball’s hottest teams recently and have climbed back into contention in the National League East race.
Entering their series against the Nationals, Philadelphia owns a 42-35 record through 77 games, placing them second in the division. The club has posted a 6-4 mark over its last ten contests and holds a respectable 19-16 record in road games this season.
Meanwhile, Washington enters the series with a 40-38 record, sitting fourth in the division standings. The Nationals have gone 5-5 in their last ten games and have struggled somewhat at home, posting a 16-22 record in 38 games at Nationals Park. The upcoming series will provide both teams with an important opportunity to gain ground in the competitive NL East race.
