Phillies Receive Kyle Schwarber Injury Update After Dramatic Win Over Nationals
The Philadelphia Phillies were forced to make a late adjustment before their matchup against the Washington Nationals after Kyle Schwarber was removed from the lineup just minutes before first pitch because of lower back tightness. Losing Schwarber so close to game time was a major concern, especially considering his importance to Philadelphia’s offense. However, the Phillies still found a way to respond in spectacular fashion, exploding for eight runs in the ninth inning to complete a wild 14-9 victory over Washington.

Following the game, interim manager Don Mattingly addressed Schwarber’s condition while speaking with reporters, including Matt Gelb of The Athletic. According to Mattingly, Schwarber’s back tightened up shortly before the game began, leading the team to take a cautious approach. The decision to scratch him was not viewed as a sign of a serious injury but rather as a preventive move to avoid making the issue worse.
The Phillies are expected to evaluate Schwarber again the following day to see how his back responds. For now, there does not appear to be any major alarm within the organization. Still, Philadelphia will be hoping the issue clears up quickly because Schwarber has been the most dangerous power hitter in the team’s lineup this season.
Schwarber is currently putting together what could become the best offensive season of his career. He is hitting .252 with a .365 on-base percentage and a .594 slugging percentage. He also leads Major League Baseball with 29 home runs, making him one of the most feared sluggers in the sport. His overall offensive production has been elite, with FanGraphs giving him a 160 wRC+, meaning he has been 60 percent better than the average hitter.
With Schwarber originally listed as the designated hitter, his late removal created an opportunity for Edmundo Sosa to step into the lineup. Sosa made the most of the unexpected chance and became one of the biggest reasons Philadelphia was able to pull off the comeback. The utility infielder delivered two extra-base hits and drove in five runs.
Sosa helped bring the Phillies back into the game after they fell behind 5-0. He drove in the team’s first three runs, including a fifth-inning home run off Zack Littell. Later, in the seventh inning, he hustled down the line to avoid a potential double play. In the ninth, he added a two-run double that helped Philadelphia break the game open.
Sosa also ended up playing third base late in the game after Mattingly used a pinch-runner for Alec Bohm, who represented the tying run. Garrett Stubbs later scored on J.T. Realmuto’s bases-clearing double, giving the Phillies a 6-5 lead. Because Bohm left the game, Philadelphia lost the designated hitter, forcing Sosa into the field.
Sosa entered the night struggling offensively, batting just .231 with a .649 OPS. But his big performance may be the spark he needs. The Phillies would gladly welcome more production from him, especially with their struggles against left-handed starters this season.
