Miami Secures Key Transfer from Top FCS Freshman CharMar Brown
The University of Miami has landed a major commitment from North Dakota State transfer running back CharMar Brown, beating out offers from Cal and Nebraska. Brown, a standout freshman last season, rushed for 1,181 yards and 15 touchdowns in 16 games, helping lead NDSU to a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) title. His stellar performance earned him the Jerry Rice Award, given to the nation’s top freshman at the FCS level.
Brown, a 5-foot-11, 214-pound back from Omaha’s Creighton Prep, initially seemed torn between staying close to home at Nebraska or joining Miami’s ascending program. While Nebraska offered the comfort of proximity and a potential shared backfield role with Emmett Johnson, Miami presented a more prominent national platform.
Late in the process, Cal entered the race and appeared to become the leader, reportedly offering Brown a clearer shot at being the starting running back.
However, things fell through with Cal. According to Pete Nakos of On3, Cal gave Brown time to finalize his decision, but when he didn’t sign, the program backed off. Whether NIL factors influenced that outcome remains unclear.
Ultimately, Brown chose Miami, where he joins a competitive running back group that includes Mark Fletcher, Jordan Lyle, Girard Pringle, and Chris Wheatley-Humphrey. The Hurricanes have been aggressive in the transfer portal this offseason. Prior to Brown’s commitment, they already had the fifth-ranked portal class per On3, trailing only Oregon, LSU, Ole Miss, and Texas Tech. With Brown now on board — along with recent additions at wide receiver, such as Tony Johnson (Cincinnati) and Keelon Marion (BYU) — Miami continues to bolster its offensive arsenal around new quarterback Carson Beck.
