Lions Could Consider Unexpected Reunion to Bolster Wide Receiver Depth
After selecting rookies Isaac TeSlaa and Dominic Lovett in April’s draft to strengthen their receiving corps, the Detroit Lions may still be exploring additional options—possibly even revisiting a familiar name. With limited experienced targets beyond Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, the team might be desperate enough to consider bringing back free agent wide receiver D.J. Chark.
TeSlaa, whom the Lions surprisingly traded up for in the third round, is expected to make an impact, but his and Lovett’s readiness remains uncertain heading into training camp. As it stands, outside of tight end Sam LaPorta and the two main receivers, quarterback Jared Goff has few reliable options downfield.
That’s where Chark comes in. A former Lion from the 2022 season, Chark had a respectable year with 502 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Though his 2024 season with the Chargers was marred by injuries and limited production, his familiarity with Detroit’s system and experience could make him a valuable short-term solution if the rookies need more time to develop.
Chark wouldn’t be a primary target, but his presence could take pressure off the top receivers while also serving as a veteran mentor to TeSlaa and Lovett. The Lions’ offense, still driven by a strong running game and deep-ball threats, might benefit from the depth and experience Chark brings — especially if they aim to bounce back from their 2024 playoff disappointment and make a serious run in 2025.
