In a candid and eye-opening media session on Wednesday, the Green Bay Packers front office and coaching staff delivered their most honest assessment yet of quarterback Jordan Love, who completed his first full season as the team’s starter in 2024. After a season filled with ups and downs, the Packers have made it clear Love’s development is far from over but they still believe in him.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst, who took the podium during Green Bay’s pre-minicamp press conference, didn’t mince words when asked about the young quarterback’s progression.
“Jordan showed us some great flashes. He also made some throws we just can’t have at this level,” Gutekunst said. “This league will humble you fast, and Jordan got a taste of that. But let’s be clear we believe in him. We just expect more.”
Love threw for 3,775 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions in 2024. While those numbers reflect promise, they also highlight inconsistency. Head coach Matt LaFleur echoed Gutekunst’s sentiments, calling the season a “rollercoaster” but noting that Love “earned another year” as the team’s unquestioned starter.
“There were moments when he looked like a top-10 quarterback,” LaFleur said. “There were also stretches where he missed reads, forced balls, and put us in bad positions. The encouraging thing is, he owned up to it every time.”
The brutally honest feedback wasn’t all negative. Veteran players, including wide receiver Christian Watson, defended Love and praised his leadership behind the scenes.
“Jordan’s our guy,” Watson said. “He works his tail off. People forget this was his first real year running the show.”
Still, the Packers reportedly explored backup options this offseason and drafted a developmental quarterback in the middle rounds a clear message that while Love is the present, the team won’t wait forever.
As Green Bay prepares for training camp, the pressure is on. Jordan Love has the talent, the trust and now, the challenge. If he takes the next step, the Packers could be contenders again. If not, another chapter in Green Bay’s long quarterback saga could be on the horizon.
One thing is certain, the honeymoon is over.
