Report: Knicks Reportedly Eye Rockets Coach Ime Udoka to Replace Tom Thibodeau
After making a deep playoff run that brought them within two wins of the NBA Finals—a rare feat in recent franchise history—the New York Knicks have reportedly decided to part ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau. Despite leading the team to the postseason in each of the last four seasons and restoring relevance to the franchise, the Knicks appear to be seeking a “new voice” on the sidelines.
In their search for a replacement, New York has turned its attention to several candidates, and according to veteran NBA insider Marc Stein (via Ian Begley of SNY), Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka is among the names under consideration. Alongside Udoka, Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd has also reportedly caught the Knicks’ interest. However, any potential hiring of Udoka would be complex—New York would need to obtain permission from the Rockets and likely provide compensation to secure his release from his contract.
Still, the idea of Udoka leaving Houston seems far-fetched to many around the league. Kelly Iko, who covers the Rockets for The Athletic, quickly dismissed the notion, and skepticism extends beyond just him. The Rockets, owned by the Fertitta family, would almost certainly reject any compensation package offered by the Knicks, no matter how generous. Even if New York tried to offer a top player like Jalen Brunson—a move unlikely to be permissible under league rules—Houston probably wouldn’t entertain the deal.
More importantly, Udoka is seen as the foundation of the Rockets’ transformation. He has helped build a new team identity and culture that has made Houston a more appealing destination for future star players. With the team’s young core continuing to develop under his guidance, Udoka’s presence has become integral to the Rockets’ rebuilding efforts.
Additionally, Udoka appears content in Houston. He’s seen significant growth in his players and is working in what many believe to be a better organizational environment than what’s offered in New York under Knicks owner James Dolan. All signs point to Udoka staying put—making the Knicks’ rumored pursuit appear highly improbable.
