BREAKING: Boston Red Sox Make First Major Offseason Trade, Send Nate Eaton to Athletics for Promising Young Pitcher
The Boston Red Sox have officially kicked off their offseason roster changes by trading outfielder Nate Eaton to the Athletics in exchange for young right-handed pitching prospect Jareth Rayo. The move marks Boston’s first reported trade of the offseason as the organization begins preparing for the 2027 campaign.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Red Sox have agreed to send Eaton to the Athletics. Baseball reporter Francys Romero subsequently reported that Boston would receive Rayo as part of the deal. The transaction gives the Red Sox another young pitcher to develop while creating an opportunity for Eaton to pursue a fresh start with his new organization.

Although Rayo remains several steps away from reaching the major leagues, Boston appears willing to invest in his long-term potential as it continues to build organizational depth.
Red Sox Acquire Promising Pitching Prospect
Rayo, 18, is a right-handed pitcher from Nicaragua who spent his first professional season in the Dominican Summer League after joining the Athletics organization as an international amateur.
Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing approximately 195 pounds, the young pitcher possesses the physical build that could help him develop into an intriguing prospect as he gains experience.
During the 2026 season, Rayo made 11 appearances, including nine starts. He recorded a 1-1 win-loss record with a 5.50 earned run average across 36 innings pitched. He also registered 36 strikeouts while surrendering 20 walks.
While his early statistics suggest there is still considerable development ahead, Rayo has time to improve his command, consistency and overall pitching approach. Boston will likely view him as a long-term project rather than someone capable of immediately strengthening its major-league pitching staff.
The trade represents another opportunity for the Red Sox to add young talent to their farm system while evaluating players who could contribute to the organization in the coming years.
Nate Eaton Moves On After Two Seasons in Boston
Eaton spent the 2026 campaign moving between the Red Sox and their Triple-A affiliate, Worcester, serving primarily as organizational depth.
The 29-year-old appeared in 24 regular-season games for Boston, recording a .160 batting average with one home run and six runs batted in across 50 at-bats. He also featured in the American League Wild Card Series against the New York Yankees, collecting one hit in two at-bats.
However, Eaton delivered more encouraging numbers at the Triple-A level. In 84 appearances for Worcester, he hit .253 with a .338 on-base percentage and a .410 slugging percentage. He also contributed nine home runs, 44 RBIs and 18 stolen bases, demonstrating a useful combination of speed and occasional power.
His defensive flexibility was another valuable quality. Eaton could cover multiple positions, including the outfield and third base, providing additional options for roster management.
Originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 21st round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Virginia Military Institute, Eaton made his major-league debut in 2022 before eventually joining Boston.
With limited opportunities to establish himself as a regular contributor, his departure creates an opportunity for a fresh chapter with the Athletics.
For Boston, the deal signals the beginning of its offseason strategy. Whether Rayo eventually develops into a meaningful contributor remains to be seen, but the Red Sox have added another young arm as they work toward building a stronger roster for 2027.
