Penguins and Canadiens Showing Interest in Golden Knights Defenseman
The NHL offseason rumor mill is heating up, and one name that’s beginning to draw significant attention is Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nicolas Hague. According to multiple league insiders, both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens have expressed interest in acquiring the towering blue-liner, who could become a key trade chip as Vegas looks to clear cap space and retool following a disappointing early playoff exit.
Hague, 25, is a 6-foot-6, left-shot defenseman known for his physical presence, shot-blocking ability, and responsible defensive play. Though not flashy offensively, he’s carved out a reliable role in the Golden Knights’ top six, averaging nearly 19 minutes per game last season. With one year remaining on his team-friendly deal carrying a \$2.3 million cap hit, Hague has emerged as an attractive target for teams seeking a defensively sound, NHL-tested blueliner without breaking the bank.
The Penguins, under President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas, are reportedly looking to upgrade their defense corps with younger, more mobile players. Hague’s age and contract status make him a natural fit for Pittsburgh’s attempt to retool around their aging core while staying competitive in a tight Metropolitan Division.
Meanwhile, the Canadiens continue to explore ways to strengthen their blue line as part of their broader rebuild. Despite having a solid group of young defenders like Kaiden Guhle and David Savard, Montreal is in need of a left-handed defenseman with size and NHL experience who can mentor younger players and stabilize the team in its own zone.
