Leicester City Plotting Move for Everton Veteran Michael Keane on Free Transfer

Leicester City are eyeing a move to sign experienced Everton centre-back Michael Keane on a free transfer once his contract expires at the end of this month, according to former Manchester United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown.

Brown, a well-connected figure in English football, told Football Insider that Leicester view the 32-year-old as a valuable addition who can bring leadership and top-flight experience to their defensive ranks following their return to the Premier League.

Keane, who joined Everton from Burnley in 2017 for £25 million, has seen his playing time diminish in recent seasons. Despite this, his experience  including over 230 Premier League appearances and 12 caps for England  makes him a strong option for a newly-promoted Leicester side looking to bolster their backline.

“He’s a seasoned defender who still has a lot to offer, especially to a side like Leicester that needs Premier League know-how,” Brown said. “Michael would add maturity and composure to a relatively young squad.”

The Foxes, now under the guidance of manager Steve Cooper, are believed to be targeting experienced free agents to help ease the financial pressure of promotion while ensuring squad depth across the backline. Keane’s availability on a free transfer presents a low-risk, potentially high-reward signing.

Keane could follow in the footsteps of other veteran defenders who have helped stabilize newly-promoted sides, offering tactical flexibility and mentorship for Leicester’s younger defenders, such as Wout Faes and Jannik Vestergaard.

While no agreement has been finalized, talks are expected to progress swiftly with Keane now free to negotiate with other clubs following the expiry of his Everton deal.

If the deal goes through, it would mark Leicester’s second major move of the summer window as they prepare for the challenges of top-tier football in 2025.
